Within the period of 1900-1920, many national reforms were rising to the top as Progressive Era reformers and the federal government heard the voices of the people. The effectiveness of Progressivism is a controversial subject for some, but the future was changed through the events of any actions a president made, the rights of people, and unfair treatment and conditions. This era brings changes to our society that also changes the future of it. These two decades brought forth successful times in bettering America. Presidents create the leadership position that has a say in all of the decisions for a country. In this era, many judgments of situations needed to be decided, and it made it blatantly obvious as to who made the wrong or right decisions. In the political cartoon published by Washington Post in 1907, Roosevelt wanted to convey that it was necessary to determine what trusts were good or bad. Trusts were made to shut down businesses and he felt he had the power to run these options and opinions. After some violated the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, Teddy really took a step forward in proving his trust-busting techniques. In a speech that Roosevelt made in February of 1912, he expressed his belief on the importance of the people participating in direct election of Senators through his speech. This importance that he felt was necessary eventually led on to the 17th Amendment, which was passed the year after. In Herbert Croly’s New Republic, Wilson received quite a bit of loathing from Croly as he expressed his opinions. The supporters of Wilson definitely disagreed with an article like this, and it was unacceptable to some. Whether liked or disliked, the presidents during this period made an impact on our nation, and the people wanted to be heard for the rights they wanted. With the freedom of speech America has, some take quite a bit of advantage in that. In the Clayton Anti-Trust Act, it proposes commerce as unlawful, and states that no one can create a monopoly or mess with this specific act. It definitely was a bigger step forward in terms of trading and buying, as people and businesses could not do so anymore. Aside from something primarily for businesses, a photograph obtained by National Archives clearly shows the rights that women are fighting for. Women wanted to be self-governed, and they felt it was absolutely necessary. They were treated quite different from men, and believed that they needed more forms of equality.
The Progressive Movement that occurred during the early 20th century was a time of major reform in the United States of America. During this time, there was a group of activists that referred to themselves as the Progressives, and they sought to change society for the people. The way that they intended to do this was change through their ideals of democracy, efficiency, regulation, and social justice. With this movement came the election that changed the course of America’s history “…demonstrating a victory for progressive reforms as both Progressive candidates accounted for 75 percent of all the votes” (Bowles). The candidates in this election were Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.
The term Progressivism implies a philosophy that promotes change/reform in the current political, economic, and social aspects of society while conservatism stresses gradual change in society but promotes tradition rather than change. The Progressive movement from 1901 to 1917 worked to improve aspects of society that grew out of problems which occurred during the Industrial Age. The goals of the "Progressives" were to stop monopolies, corruption, inefficiency and social injustices. Both progressive acts and amendments were being passed to deal with social ills, corruption in politics and corporate America. The period from 1901-1917 was more a victory for liberalism, mainly "modern liberalism", than a triumph of conservatism due to the fact that multiple reform movements were occurring in this era changing political, economic, and social aspects in society to protect the rights of the common man.
In the beginning of the twentieth century, the economy was booming, new technology flourished. The rapid industrialization brought achievement to the United States, however, it also caused several social problems. Wealth and power were concentrated in the hands of a few, and poverty and political corruption were widespread. As people became aware of these problems, a new reform group was created. Unlike populism, which had been a group of farmers grown desperate as the economy submerged into depression, the new reform movement arose from the educated middle class. These people were known as the progressives. The Progressive Movement was a movement that aimed at solving political, economic, and social problems. The Progressives were people from the middle class who had confidence that they could achieve social progress through political reform. The Progressives sought after changes and improvements in the society through laws and other federal actions.

The progressive era was a time period that opened the eyes of Americans. Rapid growth and industrialization caused huge strains on the labor force and government intervention was needed. There were key moments that pushed the American people into a progressive state and key moments that spoke measures of the success they had. The progressive era was just the beginning of the movement and set the bar for the rest of the twentieth century on what was expected from the government and our presidents. Through the 20th century we have seen presidents that have come from opposite sides of the spectrum
The Progressive era in America (roughly late nineteenth century into the 1930s) was in response to government exploitation, bigotry, child labor, unpleasant working conditions in processing plants, absence of human rights for the ladies and minorities, and environmental degradation. Numerous positive changes were made: thanks President Theodore Roosevelt, who demanded safeguarding America's common assets; he likewise busted imposing business models and called for justice for women.
The Progressive Movement, lasting from 1901-1920, was a time of great change in America. Originating as a response to corporate and political corruption at the turn of the century, progressives emphasized improving American society by taming capitalism. However, with this political and economic reform came social injustice. While America made great strides towards new and more efficient business, banking, and politics, the early twentieth century showed conservative approaches to issues like racial, ethnic, and religious equality.
The progressive era helped many different people, and the country definitely benefited from it. Before the progressive era, working conditions were horrible. People cheated on their taxes and jobs were harder to get. Corruption also took over the government. The progressive era was a success because all these problems were fixed. The progressive Era was a success because corruption was ended, working conditions were improved, and everyone got a fair chance at life.
In the years from 1890 to 1917, the time period known as the Progressive Era took place. This era was based on the new ideology of progressivism. Progressivism is a reform development in response to desire to improve the life during the industrial age. In this movement, the United States aimed to use government power to reform the country and its citizens, including making moderate political changes and social improvement. Two of the most prominent figures in this time period that brought out the most change were President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt and President Woodrow Wilson. While both contributed greatly to the reform and improvement during the Progressive Era, they both differed in how they did so. Economically, both presidents passed legislation to keep monopolies and corrupt companies out of power, however President Roosevelt sought to keep the good monopolies whereas President Wilson sought to destroy all monopolies. Politically, both Wilson and Roosevelt passed legislation to help the people and bring equal representation, such as with Roosevelt’s New Nationalism Plan and Wilson’s New Freedom Plan. Socially, both presidents worked hard to improve the working conditions of laborers; however Roosevelt focused on the area of conservation whereas Wilson focused on foreign affairs. In their terms in office, President Roosevelt and President Wilson passed many laws and reforms impacted by their own views that helped the country grow into a stronger nation economically, politically, and socially during the Progressive Era.
During the Progressive Era in the early twentieth century, the reformers and the federal government were limited in their successful in bringing reform at a national level. Although there were a sufficient number of reforms of this movement that made significant gains, some did not fare as well as others. Reforms regarding corporation regulation, the fight against child labor and women rights were three movements that were particularly reasonable in terms of their success. Furthermore progressives had a limited effect in bringing national reform.
After looking closely at all four documents, the Progressive Era ended child labor, improved working conditions, and brought victory to women suffrage. Goals of the movement and people who took part in it have also been highlighted. It is concluded that Progressivism movement was effective and changing American values and lifestyles.
Thesis The Progressive Era and the New Deal Era had a significant amount of similarities with policies and programs to reform the American society and improve lives and fight poverty in America. Although the Progressive and New Deal Era had many similarities, there were still differences between them. Both the Progressive and the New Deal Era’s main goal was to improve American society. Both of the Progressive and New Deal’s accomplishments were rooted in the economic depression and the need for change before the era, the Guilded age in the 19th century for the Progressive era, and the Great Depression for the New Deal era. As the Guilded Age was ending, and the Progressive Era was emerging, most American families had to live with the harsh reality of sweatshops, slums, child labor, corruption in government and businesses, disease, and racial prejudice.
During class, the Progressive Era from 1890-1916 was discussed. The countless reforms happened in the Progressive Era were bound to be controversial. Nevertheless, based on our study, it was my contention that the Progressive Era was successful on account of the changes made on social welfare and on the role of presidents.
Even though they were both progressives, the two presidents had different paths in mind for the future of the United States. Their different perspective and priorities were evident in their speeches: New Nationalism by Roosevelt and New Freedom by Wilson. Wilson's New Freedom looked to the destruction of all trusts to promote economic competition and permit small businesses once again to flourish. While the federal government was to use its power on a one-time basis to bust all trusts, the federal government was to have no role in regulating business. Any regulation would have to be done by state governments. This contrasted markedly with Roosevelt's New Nationalism,...
