Popularity of Plastic Surgery

In 2008 over “9.2 million women in the United States received some form of cosmetic surgery” (medicalnews.com). Plastic surgery is becoming a way for people to escape there insecurities, but is that the main reason why cosmetic procedures have been increasing in popularity over the years? Plastic surgery is “a reconstructive surgery to a variety of operations performed in order to repair or restore body parts to look normal or to change a body part to look better” (answers.com). I believe there are three main reasons why more Americans are resulting to plastic surgery. More Americans are feeling insecure with their bodies. Also, Americans are subjected to media that portrays what an ideal citizen should look like. Lastly, Americans want to be viewed as attractive. Thus, Americans have resorted to more surgical procedures to make themselves appear attractive.

There are two procedures surgeons can perform. The first method is surgical, “where the surgeon fixes something an individual is not content with. This includes but is not limited to breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, tummy tuck, deformation, birth defects and liposuction” (healthline.com). The second form of surgery is a non-surgical procedure, where the surgeon will correct a problem without involving any cutting or recovery time to the patient. This includes Botox, laser hair removal, chemical peel, and laser skin resurfacing. These procedures have the ability to make a person feel attractive and confident about themselves.

Experts found that “48 percent of individuals that get a cosmetic procedure performed have a deformation or a birth defect they had repaired” (livescience.com). Plastic surgery gives individuals with deformation an option to a normal, confident, and beautiful life style.

Plastic surgery is becoming a way for people who are insecure to do something about what troubles them. Thus, plastic surgery is growing in popularity. This is caused by three main reasons. One being Americans are becoming insecure with their bodies. Secondly, Americans are subjected to specific types of media each day that portrays what someone should look like. Thirdly, Americans want to be attractive to others. These reasons help to explain the growth in popularity of plastic surgery
