Police in a community perform a large scope of public services. Depending on how one perceives the police and the reason why they are interacting with the officers usually decides if one’s experience is either a negative or positive one. For instance, if someone is pulled over for drinking while driving they may not consider their interaction with an officer a positive one. If someone locks their keys in the car and an officer comes to their rescue, then they may view their interaction with the officer as positive. However, no matter which experience someone has with the police, the officers greatest service to their community and to other officers is to have and maintain their integrity, honesty, values, standards, courage, civility, as well as their ethics in the field.
For an example, one of an officer’s many services to the public is as a first responder. In many situations, an officer is the first person to arrive on the scene of a crash, a medical emergency, or any other scene where violence has taken place. Even during a welfare check, an officer may come upon a medical emergency where they may have to take action. For instance, during a welfare check with an elderly person, an officer may have to access the situation with some basic questions; do they have food, are their living …show more content…

For an example, if someone is using excessive speed, it is the officer’s duty to the community to stop the person operating the vehicle. Whether the officer gives the person a ticket for the violation is up to the officer (officer discretion), but for public safety action is required. The same action is required for a person who has been drinking and driving; they must be stopped. However, due to community standards or views on drinking and driving, the officer does not have much discretion to use and the violator will be arrested; DWI laws are strictly enforced (Miller, Hess, Orthmann,
