Poetry is expressed through different styles and formats. Each author wants to inject the reader into the writings through style and tone. The first style discussed is the open form poetry. Open form poetry does not have a specific pattern relating to line length, rhyming of words, and meter. The poem “Spring and All” written by William Carlos Williams is an example of what open form poetry is. This poem is about the death of nature and how new life will emerge once nature awakens. New life emerges cold and uncertain as a new season dawns. The second poem is “A Letter to Daphnis, April 2, 1685” written by Anne Finch. This poem is in the form of a heroic couplet. For example, “This to the crown and blessing of my life / The much loved husband of a happy wife” (1-2). The two words at the end of the first and second lines rhyme. Anne Finch’s poem is written in one paragraph or stanza. Finch uses iambic pentameter in most places of her poem except a few. A line in iambic pentameter consists of unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one. Pentameter indicates that the line has five metrical beats. This is an example of iambic pentameter from Anne Finch’s poem. “To him whose constant passion found the art” (3). This iambic pentameter has ten syllables in the line. The poem by Anne Finch has varied punctuation to portray the authors expression. The use of commas, semicolons, colons, and periods depicts the meaning and clarifies the heroic couplet. This poem closes with a period unlike William Carlos William’s poem which closes with no punctuation. Compared to the poem “Spring and All” it has eight different stanzas in it. It is uncommon to have a poem written with one paragraph that does not resemble poetry. The authors always seem to get the message across regardless of style or construction.
