Playing football comes with several risks factors that players’ acknowledge prior to playing the game starting a young age. Regardless, these players still chose to play the game, which they end up loving and cherishing despite all the risks accompanied with it. Football is one of the toughest sports in the world; it takes a certain amount of strength, speed, and aggressiveness to play 48 minutes of hard-nosed football. However, the National Football League (NFL) is in the midst of a controversial issue. Is the NFL getting soft? This has been a debatable issue for several years. While some believe that implementing all these rules in the NFL is progressively turning the game soft, others say that the NFL is not getting soft; it is just trying to make the game safer for its players.
ESPN writer Jeffri Chadiha claims the NFL is getting too “soft.” He also compares the NFL to the “pansy league”. Jeffri expresses his frustration with the NFL innovating the Roughing -The -Passer rule, also known as the Tom Brady Rule. The rule states, “Defenders who have been knocked to the ground must get back on their feet before tackling the quarterback”(Chadiha). Jeffri emphasizes that all of the rules in the NFL are changing the culture of a sport that has always emphasized brutality. Minnesota Vikings Defensive End, Jared Allen, said, “We play a violent sport, we know that and we willingly sign up for it” (Chadiha). Pittsburgh Steelers Safety, Troy Polamalu, believes that the NFL lost its essence of what real American Football is about. Polamalu claims, “The league’s obsession with heavy-handed discipline for overly aggressive plays has more to do with money than safety” (Chadiha). Chadiha adds on to that by claiming that even the retired play...

...and no health insurance” (DeLamiellure 134). The NFL is so worried about the health of current players, instead on focussing on former players, the ones that need most of their help.
In conclussion, most of the authors can agree in saying that the NFL is progressively getting soft, but there are a few that believe other wise. The NFL is one of America’s most popular sports and there is still no common ground for this controversial issue. If this issue continues, who knows what is at risk for the future of the NFL. This issue can affect a lot of industries aside from the NFL. It can affect college sports, high school sports, little league sports, the medical industry, and the mental health industry. Medical care profesionals along with The NFL commissioner should work together to keep the traditions of this hard-nose sport as well as consider players’ safety.

It began with a 25-year-old Freddie Gray dying in police custody. “Gray, 25, died of severe neck injuries suffered in the back of a police van. He 'd been shackled and handcuffed, but not secured in a seat belt” (Rector, 2016). After the acquittal, the officers in charge of the arrest and the death of Gray had all charges dropped. Essay on The Controversial Issue Of Abortion

- Protecting Abortion Laws Abortion is an extremely controversial issue and one that is continually on the forefront of debates. Those who oppose the idea (Pro-lifers), thinks it is an act of woman playing “God” who live from who dies. Yet, whether an unborn baby constitutes a normal person is questionable; a pregnant woman, on the other hand, has the undeniable right to choose whether she wants to have a child or not. Therefore, the decision to have an abortion is the personal choice and responsibility of the woman, because prohibiting abortion impedes freedom of choice and endangers the physical and mental health of women....   [tags: Abortion, Pregnancy, Childbirth, Fetus]

Essay on Collusion in the NFL

- Collusion in the NFL Contests in skill, strength and speed have occupied an important place in every culture throughout the ages. The meaning of the term sport and the effect that sport has on society is always changing. Sports have especially changed in the last two decades and can certainly be evidence by the growing number of labor disputes and court cases involving all sports. Labor relations did not play a dominant role in professional sports until the early 1970’s. Prior to unions and collective bargaining, professional athletes were treated like “privileged peons.” Today sport is more career and business than avocation and pastime....   [tags: Papers]
