I truthfully believe that my health and wellness has been divided by rules I apply to myself and those which apply to others. My definitions have drastically changed over time, and I am continually seeking to correct previously errant thoughts. Our provided text describes health as a static point in time, including the “complete physical, mental, and social well-being”, per World Health Organization description.1 In contrast, wellness is dynamic, described as health along the spectrum of life, encompassing decisions and actions which may enhance or negate one’s status as a “healthy individual”. All of this has never once approached my mind as either important or necessary towards my personal description of health and wellness. Personally, I now judge an individual’s health based upon not their looks, but lifestyle. In this respect, I understand the idea of wellness better. If wellness is defined as the dynamic choices we make upon this mortal coil in regards to health, than I feel it is much easier to equate this to a process of following Christ. I’ll never be a perfect man. I’ll never be the perfect specimen of health. However, if I continue to work on being a better human being, avoiding sins and transgressions, I can perhaps be a better Christian and person. Likewise, on the pursuit of better health, if an individual begins eating better, exercising correctly, monitoring heart health, maintain good mental/social standings, while avoiding over indulgence in poor habits like smoking and the like, they can pursue a much better state of wellness.
