“I think and think for months and years, ninety-nine times, the conclusion is false. The hundredth time I am right.” -Albert Einstein. It is stated from an online dictionary source that perseverance is defined as “continued effort to do or achieve something despite of difficulties, failure, or opposition” (noun) or “the action or condition or instance of persevering” (verb). Some commonly known synonyms of perseverance are persistence, tenacity, determination, and staying power. Antonyms of this word include apathy, cowardice, and irresolution. The first known use of the word perseverance was all the way back in the 14th century. It originated in the Middle English as perseveraunce, the Middle French as perseverance, and in Latin as persevērantia.
In the story, A Long Walk to Waters, written by Linda Sue Park, the readers are introduced to many different individuals that were able to survive challenging environments. Those individuals used those factors, perseverance, cooperation, and independence. Those factors have allowed individuals to make it past through the harsh environments throughout their journey. Perseverance shows how those individuals kept on going without giving up. Meanwhile, cooperation represents how struggling individuals are able to work together in order to achieve their goal. Last but not least independence shows how individuals can conquer a hurdle by him or herself.
In the novel Savvy, the author Ingrid Law delves into the theme dedication or perseverance by periodically showing that Mississippi, Mibs, doesn’t give up, and she is determined to wake her Poppa up. Mib’s family, the Beaumonts, live between Kansas and Nebraska also known as Kansaskas or Nebransas. Mib’s special thirteenth birthday is approaching, the birthday where she’ll get her savvy- the special power most people in her family receive on their thirteenth birthday. But, nothing goes to plan and two days before her birthday her Poppa gets in a car accident, and ends up in a hospital in Salina, Kansas. Some people are born with it, others are not so lucky. It’s the feeling of raw bravery and a want to be the best. A way of always seeing the light even before the dawn. People often mistake it for just “never giving up”, but this is much more, almost a superpower. Perseverance is not just the optimisty of dreamers it’s knowing how to live, even when you’d rather be dead.
“ I am a slow walker but I never walk back.” Sometimes it takes time but you always want to get to the end. Even if things get in your way or something is hard, you never give up and you keep pushing forward. In my opinion, perseverance is an excessively essential trait to have in the case of survival. Shackleton needed to get out of the Ice to survive, he canoed for a severely long amount of time. It was very tiring and even so Shackleton didn’t give up. In the book Hatchet Brian needed a fire to survive. He kept trying but nothing seemed to be working, he never gave up and he just kept going.
From our readings so far, one can see the strenuous decisions that have to be made when choosing to conform or to rebel against societies expectations. There can be both positives and negatives to conforming or rebelling. One isn’t right or wrong over the other, it’s based off of the particular individual. “The Hero’s Journey” is the perfect template for most works of literature. It conveys the steps necessary individuals must take to find themselves and to overall grow as a person. “Barn Burning” by William Faulkner and “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. are perfect examples of characters going through the cycles of the “Hero’s Journey,” while trying to determine exactly where they belong in society. Not only characters in a story,
“The good guy always wins” is a phrase we often hear growing up. Parents reassure their kids that the hero will win despite the trials he encounters. Joseph Campbell, who coined the term “monomyth”, identifies these trials as a part of a pattern in the hero’s journey. This pattern consists of separation, initiation, and return. Osmosis Jones goes through this pattern with only a few pieces missing. The hero in this story teaches others that giving up is not an option. One must have perseverance to complete a goal, in this case, to save Frank. The journey that Jones takes to help him get through the monomyth helps develop the theme of perseverance because he never gives up on what he wants.
Henry David Thoreau and Stephen Crane wrote about the importance of relying on oneself in their novels, Walden and Maggie: A Girl of the Streets respectively, while disagreeing on the significance of philanthropy and material possessions. Thoreau writes about his expedition to Walden Pond to find the true core values of life and connect with nature in his novel, Walden. He expresses romantic and philosophical views on life in Walden, emphasizing different themes such as simplicity, obscurity, and self-sufficiency. Maggie: A Girl of the Streets features a young immigrant woman of the grimy New York tenements, who falls into a hopeless romance, forcing her into the neglected life of a prostitute.

Over 35,000 workers across America are forced to make a decision between continue working for Verizon or begin picketing. If they choose to continue working, they are then called a Scab and are tormented by their fellow workers. Even though they are getting paid, Scabs are kicked out of the union, stop receiving benefits from the union, and betray the other verizon workers. The other option would affect the whole family, not just the individual worker. When picketing, workers stop receiving their usual paychecks. Instead they will receive two hundred dollars a week from the union for picketing
“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all. Dale Carnegie believed that perseverance could overcome even the harshest obstacles. As a final point, literature informs humanity about these types of topics proven in The Book Thief with friendship, courage and perseverance. It teaches the readers that friendship relies on trust between two people and mentally help a person to live a continuing life. It also demonstrates that with courage, people will overcome that fear of doing things they have never thought of doing, but will face the fear of the outcome. Further, with perseverance, anyone can feel like they can accomplish the impossible and thrive to be successful. Perhaps, since we humans educate ourselves mostly from literature. Perseverance means that you never give up on any goal or idea that you have no matter how hard the road might be or how high the standards are. In literary examples, Rudy's Lessons For Young Champions labeled that perseverance is the way to develop good character. One must be able to do the right things, to show strength in what you believe in and to get back up when you’re knocked down over and over. With modern examples, the movie Rudy showed that Rudy Ruettiger has great perseverance. When everyone doubted Rudy on never making it to his dream college. Everyone doubted Rudy, even his friends and family, that he will never dress when he is on the football team.

Tenacity. It means persistence, perseverance, endurance, patience, and determination all in one word. It means you can persevere through anything the world can throw at you even when you don’t know what’s up ahead. Even if you want to give up, tenacity makes you keep on going. It’s the voice inside you saying “I will persist until I succeed, and even then I will not stop.” It tells you that you’re okay even when you’re not, just to make you keep on going. Persistence. Persistence in the face of opposition. It is easy to be passionate when life and business is good. You will have the perfect mindset and attitude. However, what happens when the perfection stops and the hardships set in. Will you drive forward, with the same passion and commitment? The winners do. The successful entrepreneurs do.
