I retell The Ramayana beyond the last excerpt from “Chapter 10- Across the ocean” (Narayana 2006, 231) from Sita’s perspective. This is when Hanuman has returned with the news that he found Sita under Ravana’s domination in Lanka. Rama, Lakshmana, Sugriva and Hanuman then decide to go across the ocean to rescue abandoned Sita and to kill her kidnapper. I chose to symbolize the bridge that was built by Hanuman’s monkey force when Rama had to cross the ocean but instead changed it to present Rama as being the sole builder of the bridge himself. I felt that this twist in the story adds to the idea of the bridge being a strong symbol of the love between Rama and Sita.

I chose to arrange the characters in such a way, that the scene right before the fight between Ravana and Rama is shown. Therefore, on left hand side stands Lakshmana, Sugriva and Hanuman. Ravana and abandoned Sita stand towards the left. Finally, in the middle Vibishna is seen to be having a face-off with Rama.
Often authors that retell great books modify their use of language, style of writing and techniques to innovate the original storyline. This is too apt the current mindset of the audience. I achieve a similar purpose by visualizing the bridge and the scene before the ultimate war between the good and the evil. To conclude, my retelling aims to connect to the contemporary audience and help them visualize the great book with an important cultural and historical significance.
