Oprah Gail Winfrey is one of the most famous women alive, and not only for her riches, but in the way that she has contributed back to society. Oprah has made billions and has given away more than half of those billions to different charities throughout the world. Never having children of her own, Oprah dedicates her life to making the lives of others better.

Oprah was born on January 29th, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi to her mother Vernita Lee, a single teenager who works as a maid, and her father Vernon Winfrey, a coal miner, barber, and city councilman. Her name was supposed to be pronounced as ‘Orpah’, from the bible, but because of the difficulty as the pronunciation, she was known as Oprah almost from her birth. On September 17 Winfrey stood up and announced she wanted "to get the country reading." She told her adoring fans to hasten to the stores to buy the book she had chosen. They would then discuss it together on the air the following month. Every book that Oprah even mentioned would generate hundred of thousands of sales for that author, so being on Oprah’s book list was an achievement in itself.
The Oprah Winfrey show is still playing in syndication (reruns on different networks) and Oprah continues to be one of the most powerful, wealthiest women in not only America but the world. Even though Oprah is enjoying a “retirement” period in her life, she continues to contribute her time to underprivileged children and especially those in Africa. Knowing that if she can change the world of just one child has always been a passion for Oprah Winfrey because nobody was there for her when she was a young child.
