As a Latina growing up in New York City with immigrant parents from the Dominican Republic, I knew the difficulties of growing up in poverty. As a child, family financial arguments were a common thing, budgets were strict and extra funds were low. However, when it came to education money was not a factor. Education was the solution to poverty, if you had a good education then you succeed and obtain a great job. I kept this mentality with me throughout my high school and college years. I completed my undergraduate studies in Rhetoric and Communications in hopes of starting a marketing career. An increase of social workers in schools can reduce the number of students chronically absent and getting retained. Social workers will provide a safe haven in the school for families to discuss any issues that could affect their child 's education. It is often left in the hands of outside agencies such as child protective services or preventive care services. Families don 't respond positively to outside agencies because it’s by another person’s doing. Social workers in schools will give families the opportunity to voluntarily seek help and obtain the needed services.
All in all, my experience working with children has led me to the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College to pursue a graduate degree with a concentration in child welfare. Working as a social worker although challenging, is a rewarding career. Social workers assist people and families to cope with problems they are facing in their lives. To understand more about social workers, I caught up with Margaret Jones, who is on a charitable mission in the country. Margaret, as she prefers to be called, was born in Haiti but after the devastating earthquake, which saw her lose four close relatives, decided to relocate to the United Kingdom where she got her current job.
However, the most clear and abundant effect of childhood trauma appeared to be behavioral problems. This was also the issue that often got covered up the most with “he/she is just a bad kid.” Like what was mentioned before, no kid is a bad kid. However, because the behavioral problems are what normally catches everybody’s eyes its normally what is caught first. Then you have the learning and emotional problems. Many people will often say that the child is slow or that they are sensitive, but many times there is so much more to the problem. My strengths definitely stem from my passion about helping others and social work. Becoming a mother and overcoming tough challenges is also a strength of mines. When I first realized I had an aspiration to have a career in social work I originally wanted to work with youth and adolescents. Initially, I decided youth and adolescent because I had dealt with many difficult experiences as an adolescent, which required assistance of social workers, and counselors. As a social worker in a school system they must work with mental concerns, behavioral concerns, support academically and also provide counseling with the students and families. While providing counseling it is also important to come up with interventions to help with student’s needs. Social workers within school systems have some of the same obligations as teachers and other members of the faculty. Many of these obligations include providing a positive setting for teaching, learning, and confidence within all children. Second Start Alternative High School is an educational setting for teens who struggle with the structure of a traditional high school. Many of the students struggle with emotional and behavioral disabilities that can hinder academic success. Additionally, many of the students are affected by outside factors that are beyond their control such as familial stressors. Second Start’s goal is to provide students with a safe place to get their needs met while also delivering them with an education. The social work courses that I have taken prior to my placement have provided me with the knowledge and skills to be successful with the students at Second Start. Certain theories, concepts, and values I have learned throughout my social work education have been specifically helpful in working with this population.

Social work helps people to deal with personal and social problems so that people can overcome or adjust to any personal difficulties. Social work is a combination of social stability and social change. Social stability promotes individual and social welfare and social change seek to change negative aspects of society. Values are implicit within the law and policy and these tend to reflect the values within society. Personal values can influence the way social workers interpret and implement their profession.
A social worker needs to have a variety of knowledge and understanding of theories when working with individuals. I will start the essay by looking at what theory is and the nature of the relationship between theory and practice. I will discuss two specific theories, namely Cognitive behavioural therapist (CBT) and Person centred approach. While explaining the theories I will identify their underlying values and explain how they might support or even conflict with social work values. C. Becket DATE explains how Social work practice is extremely diverse in many ways. There are a number of service user groups which social workers work with. Some of these include, children and families, young offenders, older people and adults and children with mental health problems. Some social workers may dedicate themselves to a certain area however they will need to have a systematic understanding of theories in order to work efficiently with all service user groups.
