New Technology
The technology that I have selected to discuss is handheld radiological monitoring. There are several new equipment models being marketed. One of the most recognizable and well-respected names in radiological monitoring is Canberra. One of Canberra’s latest offerings for handheld devices is the Radiagem™ 4000. The device provides the capability of monitoring dose rates and contamination levels. There are a variety of probes available for use with the meter itself. The unit is waterproof and lightweight.
The Radiagem™ 4000 takes radiological measurements through an internal, energy compensated, Geiger Mueller detector. Through the use a various external probes, contamination levels can be quantified and readings can be recorded. The probes can be added or removed while the instrument is turned on. The external probes can be calibrated independent of the meter.
What does it do?
The Canberra hand held survey meter can be used to measure levels of transferable contamination, establish working dose rates and perform isotopic analysis. When performing surveys of radiological areas, it is important to gather data quickly and accurately. Modern survey meters allow for quick measurements of transferable contamination levels. Dose rates in work areas can be established for the protection of workers and to identify changes in conditions.
The radiation level that a worker has been exposed to is called their dose. Radiation dose is measured in rem. Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (2010) defines rem as “the dosage of an ionizing radiation that will cause the same biological effect as one roentgen of X-ray or gamma-ray exposure”. What this means is that early radiation researchers found a way to equate the level of radi...

Essay on Importance of Radiological Technology

- When you hear the word radiology, what comes to mind. Do you think of the overbearing effects that radiation can have on the body or perhaps the remarkable usage that comes from it's technology. Most people don't realize how extremely helpful radiation can be, but seldom it can be dreadful. The medical field would not be as productive without the use of radiological technologies. When I say dreadful I mean the damaging consequences on the body that can come from radiation. Technicians who work around radiological equipment, such as -x-ray, CT or even mammograms, usually aren't too exposed to radiation because even though its every day, it's only for a short period of time....   [tags: Medical Technology ]

Technology Use : An Effective Monitoring System Essay

- Technology Use: Plankton monitoring in British Columbia was started more than fifteen years ago. Since then there were only few improvements made in monitoring. The knowledge on harmful plankton was improved as the new harmful species were discovered over the years and improvements were made in sampling equipment. Apart from that, there hasn’t been much improvement in plankton monitoring. On the other hand plankton mitigation system has been improved tremendously. Unfortunately, with an ineffective monitoring system even best mitigation system would be not much of use....   [tags: Better, Improve, Technology, Light]

The Importance of Corrosion Monitoring Technology Essay

- I. WHY CORROSION MONITORING Corrosion cost the process industries an estimated $300 billion dollars a year in lost production, equipment failure, and fines for environmental and safety violations (Avery, 2008). Losses in money, time and equipment made it important to study the corrosion and look for ways to stop it or control it. But since corrosion is a natural problem, it means that we can't totally stop it from happening, but we can try to control it. This fact led to the technology of corrosion monitoring which on the other hand started to undergo development by taking different approaches, considerations and ideas to control the corrosion problem....   [tags: Environment, Environmental]

Essay on Electronic Fetal Monitoring

- Electronic Fetal Monitoring Technology has had a very prominent influence on electronic fetal monitoring since its appearance in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Dramatic changes in the heartbeat, such as a long period or a drop in the rate or intensity, could be detected,. Now, not only is the electronic fetal monitor used on the outside of the womb by strapping electrodes to the mother’s abdomen but electrodes can also be inserted during the first stage of labor and placed directly on the baby’s head....   [tags: Technology Pregnancy Essays]
