Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in Mvezo, South Africa and he died December 5, 2013, in Johannesburg, South Africa. In his 95 years of life, he would spend 27 of them in prison for standing up against the government. In 1952, Nelson Mandela was put in jail for the first time because he arranged a peaceful civil rights movement. He was the most honored political prisoner in history, receiving the Nobel Peace prize in 1993. Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the first democratically-elected president of South Africa in 1994. Even though he usually got into a lot of trouble for his doings, Nelson Mandela was a great powerful political leader because he was willing to die for what he believed in and he went to prison for acting on it.
He studied for a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University College of Fort Hare, but two years later he was expelled because he was participating in a student protest. Mandela got a job as a mine security officer, and he completed his BA through the University of South Africa and then went back to Fort hare and graduated in 1943. But by the time he was released in 1990 South Africa became an outcast. He led his country’s hold of the world that rejected it. Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the first democratically-elected president of South Africa in 1994.In 1999 Nelson Mandela stepped down from his position as president of South Africa after only one term. In “The Wall Street Journal” Peter Wonacott stated that “Though Mr. Mandela had stepped down from the presidency in 1999, he still remained a father figure for a country going through wrenching economic and political change.” This show how important Nelson Mandela was to South Africa and how much of an impact he actually made. However South Africa’s economy struggled to grow about 2% and unemployment for young people was at about 80% during the year he stepped down as president. But a lot of the South Africans born in the beginning of democracy in 1994 are frustrated with the government that was led by Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress. Nelson Mandela was a strong political leader who went through many lengths to ensure that Africans got equal right. Also he put himself in situations where he got in trouble with the law. He got arrested a few times and spent 27 years in prison. One of the reasons he got arrested was because he snuck out of South Africa so he could get support from a broader range of people.
