Growing up in a middle class family in Nepal, you’re usually introduced to three different languages: Nepali, English, and Hindi. My mother tongue is Nepali. Now, Nepali and Hindi are quite similar, you learn to understand and speak in Hindi as you grow older and start watching Bollywood movies, it’s no big deal. English however, is learned slowly; right before a toddler turns three, he or she is introduced to the English alphabets before school career starts for them. Yes, kids in Nepal start school when they’re toddlers. We start when we are three years old, with “Nursery” grade level where we learn our basics, “a,b,c’ and “1,2,3,” probably few colors, and of course the nursery rhymes like “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Stars,” and “Baa, Baa Black …show more content…

“But how did you learn English so fast? You have little to no accent? Wow, you learned English so fast!” I have spent probably thirty hours of my five years in America explaining and telling some that, if you were fortunate enough to go to school, public or private in Nepal, especially in the major cities, you were exposed to the English language. I know my mother had gone to a public school and she learned her basic English there. I, on the other hand, had the privilege to go to private schools, and within that, I had learned more than just the basics. Private schools in Nepal are very encouraging about the learning of the English language, especially because it is known as the “International Language.” In fact, one of the schools I attended even had little signboards here and there that said “English Speaking Zone.” Schools and teachers would really go out of there way to enforce English for the eight hours we would spend in …show more content…
