Reflection Of The Diversity Of Students In The Classroom

After spending weeks at Kay Road Elementary located in Bryon, Georgia, I have observed various students in the classroom. Compared to my first field placement at Hunt Elementary in Fort Valley, Georgia, the diversity of the students are totally different. Here there are just as many Latino students to African American students. I was placed in second grade in Mrs. James’ class which consist of two three Latinos, nine African American’s, and six Caucasian’s. She is a Caucasian females in her mid-thirty’s. Classroom management is sometimes an issue and interferes with certain learning aspects. Once she started introducing new lessons I noticed that she had multiple strategies she used throughout the lesson to motivate, encourage, and most importantly teach each student regardless of their …show more content…

There were students with reading disabilities, writing disabilities, and lower level comprehension skills. The teacher used various techniques and strategies in daily activities and during instructional time to reach everyone. One student I noticed was W. Hernandez, a male Hispanic student in the second grade. He live in Fort Valley, Georgia with his parents who are who migrated into the United States. They speak little English and works on a farm mentioned several times by Hernandez. I began noticing him around the second week of being in the classroom. I was given the task of helping students in their reading groups and this group consist of students who were reading on a first grade level. Hernandez read very fluently and if he did not now a word he would sound it out of use context clues to try and understand the word. Also during a read aloud he showed that his comprehension skills were on grade level based on question that are asked based on what he has read.
