As the child of two Indiana University graduates, I am very familiar with IU. My family watches IU basketball, receives alumni mail, and visits Bloomington often. However, my early familiarity with the school discouraged my interest in IU. I had lofty dreams of going somewhere prestigious and far away, but now I’m realizing the flaw in that line of reasoning. I want to be an entrepreneur, and Kelley is the 8th best business school in the country. I don’t really want to live on the east coast, and I want to be close to the community of people I have invested in here, in Indianapolis. IU also provides me with the ability to explore a variety of academic interests because of the sheer number of credits that I will begin with. I am a good student and a hard worker, and I am confident that I could do great things for my community and myself if I was picked to be a Wells Scholar at IU. I believe WHS should nominate me for the Wells Scholarship because of my academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and character. Throughout my career at WHS, I have maintained nearly perfect grades and worked hard to excel – not just to earn an A, but to fully understand the material. I have taken every advanced course offered to me and more. I have taken 7 AP tests and earned 7 5’s. I scored nearly perfect on the SAT (superscore of 2380), nearly perfect on the ACT (raw score of 35.25), and have pushed myself by taking AP courses over the summer and performing well in ACP classes. The rigor of my classes has allowed me to earn a GPA of almost 4.6, and I’m still ready for more. I have a passion for learning and using what I learn in every day life. Knowledge in and of itself is useless without application, and I spend a lot of time trying to app... ... middle of paper ... ... been nourished at Grace Church and the Merge youth group, and I have been a part of the youth group at Northview Church as well. Taking apologetics through Anchors Away has fomented my faith, and I have made amazing friends both my age and adults who have guided and are guiding me through life. Most recently, I went on an evangelical trip to South Africa that completely changed my outlook on life and is currently challenging the path I had defined for myself. My faith fuels my confidence that everything will turn out as it should, and emboldens me to take the first step in any endeavor. I am secure in who I am as a person and know that my values will not falter in college. I believe I would be a good candidate for the Wells Scholarship and that I would represent Westfield High School in a positive light through my drive to succeed and the integrity that I possess.
I have the academic background to be able to perform successfully in this program, and the ambition to do so. Throughout my educational career I have always excelled in the classroom. I recently graduated high school, being in the top three percent of my class, all while being a captain in the varsity football team and working full time. I was able to go on a mission trip to Minnesota Native American Reservation, Squaw Lake when I was 13. I learned the four Spiritual laws, and I accepted Christ through the training. I was able to share the Good News to mostly to teens and kids. His Holy Spirit deeply filled my life, and I wanted to grow my passion for God.
I spent every spring and summer in middle school doing mission work and community service. I loved the opportunity that it gave me to build relationships and share my beliefs with people I didn’t know. Little did I know that this would pave the way for a life-changing experience that I would encounter one day. Each spring my church would host a missionary event called “The Ignite Project.” I felt an urge to join the group, recognizing that it was a calling to profess my faith in Jesus. My GPA is a 4.1000 and it teeters between 4.1500 and 4.1000. I haven't ever had a C and my grades are all A’s or A+’s. I also make sure I behave in class, so my work habits grades are also all A’s and A+’s. I’m consistently make sure that I keep my grades where they are and I always am striving for my best. If I do happen to get a grade I'm not fond of, I make sure that as soon as possible I get my grade back up to the desired A or A+. For instance, once I had a complex goal not met, so as soon as I could, I made sure I got my grade up. Now that goal is met and my grade for that quarter is A+. Even in the topics I don't enjoy as much, I make sure I work my hardest. I’m always trying to improve my grade with extra credits and 4.0 opportunities. Our goal as a church was to go into another community and share the gospel with them but we did it in a unique way, through community service. Together we volunteered in a trailer park to clean up trash, fix gardens, redo roofing, paint and clean trailers. While doing this I meet an old woman who appreciated what we were doing for her and her home and wanted to know why. This gave my small group and I an opportunity to help guide her to Christ and when we left not only did we give her a better and beautiful community and trailer to live in, but we left her with a bible and a thirst to learn more about our God. This experience was important to me because it showed how one can truly make a difference in people’s lives just through serving
The activities that I have been involved with that has impacted me as a person today is my 2013 competition cheer team bible study. It was my freshman year on a varsity team and we had many setbacks throughout the season. People were getting hurt one after the other and we had to figure out a solution in order to win the state championship. This was all very frustrating and we just had to believe that God had a plan for us. We started a bible study with my coach, Barry every Friday before school. We would talk about our problems we faced that week/how we could overcome them. I have had the opportunity to serve in several different areas of service and leadership within the church. As a member of Bethia United Methodist Church, I began serving in various worship roles such as lay reader and audio-visual technician during worship services. I led a young adult Sunday school class and was an informal young adult leader for the church. I served in our CARITAS homeless ministry each year through acts of hospitality. Our church leadership was involved in having a once a month worship service at a local historic Methodist church in Chesterfield.
I have tried my best all throughout high school and have taken challenging courses such as Calculus and Physics 2. I love a challenge and figuring how to complete one. No matter what the challenge is I will try my best to complete it. In classes such as Calculus or Chemistry, if a problem in class stumps me, I will bring it home just to figure it out and prove to myself I can do it. I do this even if it is not homework. All this flew by so fast that I actually wanted to stay longer. Doing Service hours at Summit Bible Church was a great opportunity, and I really enjoyed it because it felt good to be helping out at the Church. Another thing I did for service hours was watch my cousin for a couple of hours, while his parents were out of town.
I volunteered to help at the school's annual clothing sale. I sorted clothes, toys, and helped people find what they needed. From this experience I learned to help others in anyway I could. While being a member of this church I wanted to continue my faith as a Catholic so I took a confirmation class, to eventually make a decision to be confirmed and continue my faith.
Although I was technically not born into a Christian family, my parents were saved when I was just age 3 and dedicated their lives to fulltime ministry. At age five I moved with my family to Knoxville, Tennessee to live and serve as missionaries on a church camp. We remained there for a short time before my father heard the call to become a pastor. We moved to Texas where my dad then graduated from seminary. The first church he pastored was where I accepted Christ as my savior and was baptized at age eight. Although this happened at a young age, I know that Jesus saved me and began to work in my life from that point on. In the middle of my third grade year we moved to Grand Prairie, Texas where my dad pastored a church for the next five years. Here I spent my time serving in the nursery and attending every youth event possible. This was home and it was where I believed I was closest to Jesus. However, God began to test my faith in ways I would have never expected.
I am confident that the intelligence I have fostered will allow me to excel in my college studies, and contribute to my success as I eventually begin my career after college. I also have confidence that my life, in school and after will be used by the Lord to spread His light and gospel to the world. This is my ultimate goal in life, to follow and grow close to Him, and my growing confidence in defending my faith will greatly motivate me in my academic endeavors. Wanting to learn and wanting to grow as a child of God, striving for intelligence and character, are why I am pursuing college, and I believe my past experiences will be instrumental in achieving my future
