January 12, 2006. It was my birthday and the most tragic event of my life. I had come home to hear the horrible news that my uncle, whom I adored dearly, had passed away. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. I was heartbroken, baffled, and overall miserable. When I approached my mom and asked for the cause of his death, she replied with a downcast expression and informed me that it was due to a heart attack. At the time, I didn 't understand why him, out of all people could have had a heart attack. Our entire family had claimed that he was a born athlete. Steroids are just as addictive as any other drug, and kill just as many people.Many of the youth in America are starting to use anabolic steroids in order to gain that physical ability to play on their school team, get college scholarships, or even to play professionally. Not much is being done in order to protect them from steroids and to warn them of the affects. “A middle/high school population of 1,000 students probably has 30-40 young people who are currently using or have used anabolic steroids.” (Svare) One of the most effective ways to stop the increase of steroid abuse among the youth is to educate them and the rest of the community as well against the use of these drugs and to promote healthy diets, encourage hard work, and learn how to eat and be healthy. At the same time, new tools have been made to fight against steroid abuse. “A home test kit called SteroidConfirm can detect up to 17 different anabolic steroids,” which can help the youth of our country away from such a destructive drug. Also, knows as the first of its kind, “SteroidConfirm includes a medical review officer report, which gives the recipient the opportunity to consult with a doctor regarding test results.” (Chain Drug Review 2 June 2008) Although steroids have many disadvantages and negative aspects, there are some positive uses for them. According to Sanjeev Chaturvedi, a medicine expert at Safdarjung hospital, steroids aren’t a medicine to be taken often. Chaturvedi said "Oral steroids can help to treat many diseases and certain types of cancers, to treat autoimmune diseases, to increase the red blood cells, for delayed puberty and as a recuperating measure post-surgery."(Monitor) Doctors say that “certain types of steroids in medicines help to treat diseases like inflammatory bowel syndrome, autoimmune diseases, joint and muscle diseases and allergies and asthma.” (Monitor)The problem lies not in the steroid,
