Music in class “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything” -Plato. For generations schools have enlisted musical education in the curriculum. It has given students an idea of where music really began. Before the rap and hip hop we heard on radios and iTunes, there were artist whom write music the old fashion way. By putting notes together on a sheet of paper and determining which instruments and singers should perform. However, multiples schools want to get rid of the learning element of music. Music has been recorded in our history since the medieval times in 476 C.E. On a daily basis children learn about the presidents, wars, and inventions. They should have the same obligation towards the musical history. The history of music is broken up into six major time periods. Each producing new composers, instruments, and music sounds. The history of music began in the height of the dark ages, a dark time in history that led to a lack in refinement and structure. Medieval music consisted of religious church music that was looked upon in the churches. The times also saw society changing due to the influence from various foreign cultures. “Travel, prompted by the Crusades, led to a new and unprecedented interest in beautiful objects, elegant manners, poetry and music. The renaissance period is one of the most important periods in all of the six periods. The renaissance was apart “rebirth” and enlightenment that impose freedom of the people and the music. Music was still at the moment mostly played at religious and holy gatherings to influence celebration and merriment. “For the first time, purely instrumental music - galliards, pavanes, fantasias - and other secular music (songs, ayres, and madrigals) come into their own towards the end of the 16th century” it gave them an opportunity to begin creating music that could express every emotion and had multiple meanings.
