The movie was an interesting movie because it has the ability to make you react with many emotions. The movie follows characters that live in Los Angeles and the characters are involved in each other characters’ lives. With each character I had a first impression and I would most of the time end up with different impressions of them in the end. There are a few concepts I noticed and created after watching the film. Taking action on a subject shows that one is truly understanding of the subject. The feeling of being angry influences me to try to control my own racism since everyone has a degree of racism in them from having prejudice to being a full out racist. I’ve always been against racism, and racism ends in horrible damage. This racism was mainly fueled by stereotypes which every character had. I am regularly trying to stay away from racism as much as I can, but this movie still had a huge effect on my emotions. Maybe people who are more racist may change their ways or understanding of racism and they may try their best to be less racist. I would not say I would try to change people and take out their racism because racism comes from how they grew up and how they perceive others. It is out of our control, but it does not mean it is entirely impossible to persuade an individual with the negative effects of racism. To be honest, I have a hard time pulling anything from this movie that relates to me. I guess the Jewish people showed unconditional love for their family and their strong will not to change who they are and what they believe because someone different from them believes that they are unworthy. I grew up in a fairly large family since I am one of six children. My family is very close and I believe that we have this unconditional love for each other no matter how annoyed we get with each other. I try to instill this in my own children. I teach them that it is ok to have disagreement and to be different but you must respect those differences because that is what makes each and every one unique. It would be pretty boring if everyone in the world was the same. I also relate to the holding firm to very values and what you belief. I believe that who a person is and what they believe should not change just because someone doesn’t like them. Our study of racism is related to the video because when the girl walks out of the classroom agitated, Jane Elliot said when one gets tired of being basis of their eye color, one can walk out that door, but when people of color get tired of racism, they can’t just walk out. Being a victim of racism isn’t something anyone wants to be apart of because being picked on because of your race, religion, or ethnicity isn’t something to be happy about because people should be happy of who they are not made of. I personally know people who have been victimized of racism in schools like people from the film too. Witnessing this isn’t something to be proud of because if you don’t it or try to prevent it from happening then you are no better than the person who was giving out the bullying to that person. This movie is a wonderful production starting from 1960 and ending in 1969 covering all the different things that occurred during this unbelievable decade. The movie takes place in many different areas starring two main families; a very suburban, white family who were excepting of blacks, and a very positive black family trying to push black rights in Mississippi. The movie portrayed many historical events while also including the families and how the two were intertwined. These families were very different, yet so much alike, they both portrayed what to me the whole ‘message’ of the movie was. Although everyone was so different they all faced such drastic decisions and issues that affected everyone in so many different ways. It wasn’t like one person’s pain was easier to handle than another is that’s like saying Vietnam was harder on those men than on the men that stood for black rights or vice versa, everyone faced these equally hard issues. So it seemed everyone was very emotionally involved. In fact our whole country was very involved in president elections and campaigns against the war, it seemed everyone really cared.

Discursive Essay on Racism Racism has existed for centuries, but during the last two hundred years hatred toward ethnic minorities or even majorities has fluctuated. Racism occurs all over the world, can happen to anyone and will always exist. There are three different forms of racism, open racism, violent racism and secret racism all express forms of hatred towards ethnic groups. These forms of racism, although different, all have the same main purpose, to promote hate towards ethnic groups. Open racism expresses freedom of racial thought and speech.
I’ve chosen this movie to speak about due to the fact that it hit very close to home for me. The last time I had watched that movie was in high school, and though it affected me in some ways many years ago, it served as more of a learning experience this time – especially when paired with the discussion.
