Whether we like it or not duped exchanges exist. A duped exchange happens whenever a consumer it deceived in either the way the product works, doesn’t work, or if information is withheld about the service or product. The film Food INC does a great job showing examples of these duped exchanges. The examples range from all the different types of food we have at a grocery store, the cost of food, how food is labeled, and what exactly the meat is like. Overall, consumers should not be duped into exchanges in the food industry but duped exchanges in a different industry might be more acceptable. Four companies pretty much control all the meat in the industry. The chickens are raised and slaughtered in half the time. They are pretty much all the same size because they need to be for the machines to work properly. Tyson representative kept the film crew and people in the film from going into the area where their chickens were kept. The fact that we can’t see the way our food is produced is scary. As consumers we either don’t know the condition the animals are in or don’t want to know. In the case that we don’t know there are ways we can find out. The label on our food wont say, “this chicken was tortured.” Instead the labels will omit a lot of information because they are seen as causing unnecessary fear to the consumers. There are three kinds of deception, misinform, stimulating unconscious desires, and creating new desires. “The main problem, of course, is the desire of the stations, pressured by the sponsors, to appeal to the largest possible audience with every show”(Goldman 301). This relates directly to the reduction of content and style of the media. Advertising has a huge effect on the media because it subsidizes it. Without advertising the media exist. Advertising firms can then control what is put on TV. For example, if the news were running a segment on E. Coli in meat products, Tyson wouldn’t want to advertise during the segment. Instead Tyson would either tell the station to change the segment to something that doesn’t negatively impact their image or to completely get rid of the segment all together. This is a huge concern that advertising can have a huge impact on the news that we look to for information on what is going on. To say that falsifying the news isn’t against the law makes me wonder where exactly do I look for the information I
