MONTESSORI PROGRAM

A Developmentally Appropriate program is based on theories of child development, understanding the individual needs, strengths and weaknesses of the child obtained by observation of the child and the child’s interests, cultural and socioeconomic background as defined by the society, family and community he comes from, and by assessing what is individually appropriate for each child. The Montessori Approach to education succeeds because it is based on developmentally appropriate practices to help the wholesome growth of the child. The curriculum is based on keen observation of the child and his interaction and experimentation with an environment specially constructed and prepared for his optimal development.

Dr Maria Montessori is a pioneer in the development of a learning and teaching philosophy that could be defined as revolutionary. At a time when the accepted traditional methods of teaching were more adult directed, the Montessori Method focused on child directed learning. Maria believed that there were multiple pathways to learning and with hands on learning the child may be the creator of his own education. She believed that there is a link between the emotional development of a child and his ability to learn. She felt that the first six years of a child contributed significantly to the cognitive development of the child and that there is infinite potential in each child regardless of the diverse cultural, socio economic and socioemotional background of the child. The child is especially sensitive to acquiring knowledge from his environment, from the age of three to the age of six. In the Montessori Method children are allowed to develop according to the laws of child development. The developmentally appropriate practices this methodology of education propagates allows for the child to think constructively, creatively and independently.
