Human kind has always felt the need to own luxurious items in order to show their social status. In Ancient Rome clothing was a symbol of status and power. The color purple was considered to be the most prestigious and the higher classes wore it to show their economic power. The reason for this prestige was that the most expensive dyes were used to produce the color purple. Therefore, the color became synonymous with wealth and power [Duffy, 2007]. Just as it worked in ancient Rome, people in modern societies have the desire to show their high social status. As the higher class in the Roman Empire did with luxuries, the higher classes today spend their money on brands rather than on the mere products. These luxury belongings show the economical status of the person. However, how do branded items become famous? This paper will present the different strategies used to provide prestige to people in society.
Luxurious brands make people feel unique and important. From the moment you enter the store, the staff will receive you with a special treatment. The staff will offer you something to drink, or eat. Louis Vuttion for example takes years in training staff correctly so they will be prepared to treat customers. This treatment even goes to personal sizing, Brioni uses specialized tailors to create suits. Special treatments also occurs in jewelries, Harry Winston for example will allow you to borrow jewels if you are a frequent or a reliable customer.

People are often deceived by some famous brands, which they will buy as useless commodities to feel they are distinctive. People require brands to experience the feeling of being special. People spend their money to have something from famous brands, like a bag from Coach or Louis Vuitton which they think they need, yet all that is just people’s wants. Steve McKevitt claims that people give more thought on features or brands when they need to buy a product, “It might even be the case that you do need a phone to carry out your work and a car to get around in, but what brand it is and, to a large extent, what features it has are really just want” (McKevitt, 145), which that means people care about brands more than their needs. Having shoes from Louis Vuitton or shoes that cost $30 it is designed for the same use.
It is interesting to consider Veblen’s theory of conspicuous consumption as it pertains to the modern day fashion industry, specifically the luxury fashion sector. In The Theory of the Leisure Class, Veblen said “we all find a costly hand-wrought articles of apparel much preferable to a less expensive imitation of it;” however, at the beginning of the 20th century, couture clothing was exclusively available to those who were very wealthy, simply because of how much the garments cost. Lots of people at a high level in society use the products they own to represent their social status. As what Solomon says in his article, “advertisers have been quick to exploit the status signals that belong to body language as well.” (169) Advertising gives them a good chance to show their material success, and the advertised products make them more of individuality. For example, Michael Jordan owns a Ferrari 512 which is a super sports car with an unaffordable price. Six years after deciding to be an independent public company in late 2000, Coach Inc.’s net sales had grown at a compounded annual rate of 26 percent and the stock price had increased by 1,400 percent due to a strategy keyed to a concept called accessible luxury. Coach crafted the accessible luxury category in women’s handbags and leather accessories by differentiating themselves on price, but matching competitors on styling, quality, and customer service. The accessible luxury strategy mirrors a focus (or market niche) strategy based on low costs. Coach concentrates on a narrow buyer segment and outcompetes rivals by having lower costs than rivals and thus being able to serve niche members at a lower price. Management believed that new products should be based on market research rather than on designers’ instincts. Coach utilized extensive consumer surveys and focus groups to gain insight in the market, and ultimately a competitive advantage over competition. Coach’s $200-$500 handbags appealed to both middle class consumers who now were able to afford a taste of luxury, as well as affluent consumers with the means to spend $2,000 on a handbag on a regular basis.

The act of consumption has been the primary means through which individuals in society participate and transform culture. Culture is not something already made which we consume; culture is what society creates through practices of everyday life and consumption involves the making of culture. When attempting to understand certain acts of consumption it is necessary to observe the relations involved in production and consumption. Through technological innovation, the fashion industry has been expanded to play a prominent role in consumers’ purchasing decisions and styles are becoming less difficult to obtain. With the expansion of department stores and shopping being viewed as a leisurely activity, this has continued to transform the act of fashion consumerism. The functional interests feature a rational attachment to clothing items. Symbolic benefits involve status and prestige to fulfill the achievement for positive self-esteem. Further benefits include a provided experience for the individual consumer and the created use of imagery and desire used to enrich one’s life.
By 2002, Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton was the world’s largest luxury products company, enjoying annual sales of 12.2 billion euros. LVMH carries the most prestigious brand names in wine, champagne, fashion, jewelry, and perfume. Upon entrance of this luxury product industry, LVMH was aware that they produced products that nobody needed, but that were desired by millions across the world. This desire in some way fulfills a fantasy, making consumers feel as though they must buy it, or else they will not be in the moment, and thus will be left behind.

That is why in its mission they state to represent the most refined qualities of Western “ art de vivre” all around the world. Their objective is to be the leader in the luxury market, continuing to transmit elegance and creativity. This poses some major challenges, the main one is to keep being the leader in the luxury market through a sustainable growth. The main problem to achieve it is the high dependency on three main countries, France, Japan and USA. This becomes a threat because if there is an economic downturn in one country it affects LVMH directly that is why.
Designer handbags are both envied and enjoyed by women across the country. With prices ranging from a few hundred dollars to well over $15,000, handbags can be seen as a representation of wealth and social status. In 2014, handbag sales amounted to approximately 9.2 billion dollars, 30% of all revenue generated by women’s accessories (Statista). As sales increase, industry leaders, such as Louis Vuitton, Coach, and Dior, must ensure their marketing strategies attract consumers to their brand and handbag styles. Louis Vuitton, Coach, and Dior’s advertisements portray the need for prominence, autonomy, and aesthetic sensations to depict a luxurious lifestyle.
