The Increase
A man working full time at a fast food restaurant finally gets his paycheck hoping this time it can pay for what he needs, a home for his family, food and water, but yet it doesn’t make the cut. He may have to go to a shelter or ration his food carefully all of this just because of how low the national minimum wage is in America. Minimum wage is not increasing along with the standards to not live in poverty but if it would increase, working full time at a place like Taco Bell or Burger King would be enough to live in livable conditions where food or the day rent is due isn 't a thing to fear about anymore. Back then around the time Harry Truman was president he gave a speech called "A Fair Deal" in 1949 where he outlined the importance of economic prosperity and equality in the US. Truman knew there had to be changes in the economy as well as the boost in minimum wage when he says "We are suffering high prices. Our production is still not large enough to meet out demands. Our minimum wages are too low"(Truman). He knew what was important for the economy so it can be able to grow therefore tried to introduce into the Full Employment Act of 1946 but the act itself only played a minor role in helping the economy after due to the fact that congress cut off key points of the bill. The major spending in the second world war along with an increase in industry wouldn’t last forever. Truman knew and insisted that government and business should work together to help create new jobs and keep prosperity rolling.
