Nowadays, health to be one of the most important topics in our lives. People are really careful about their health issue; they try to eat healthy food and exercise to keep themselves healthy. Most people would consider health is without any disease. Actually, health is more than physical health. According to Kaiser Permante, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (Kaiser Permanente). In the book “The Metamorphosis,” Gregor Samsa is a tragic character because he worked so hard to support his family, even though he hated his job, but he was treated poorly after he no longer able to work. "Physical well-being is the ability to maintain a healthy body through good nutrition, regular exercise, and by avoiding harmful habit”(Physical Well-Being). Many details from the book “The Metamorphosis” showed that Gregor had poor physical health. Gregor laid in his bed, and he found that he could not turn to his right side which is his preference sleeping position. He felt a lot of pain when he tried to turn to the position (Kafka 2). As we know that turning to side position is such an easy movement for normal people. Because Gregor had very bad physical health, turning to one side was such a struggle for him. Also, he was unable to get up. No matter how hard he had tried, he was unable to control his moving limbs, which were also too weak and too tiny to push his body. After hours of struggling, he was still in the laying position(Kafka 6-8). Moreover, Gregor had breathing difficulty, and “his lungs had been quite unreliable” for many days (Kafka 48), and his breathing problems had been mentioned several times in the book. Gregor had a very sorrow life before his transformation into a beetle. He was unhappy about the job he was working. As a travelling salesman, he complained that he always worried about the connection between trains, “the irregular bad food, the temporary and constantly changing human relationships which never come from heart” (Kafka 2). He hated his job, if he didn’t have to pay his father’ debt, he would have quit the job 5 years ago (Kafka 3).
