The mass movement of Civil Rights happened in the 1960’s and during that time there were two very influential men who both made an impact on the world. Dr. Martin Luther King and activist out of Alabama who many African Americans followed because of his willpower to fight and “dream” he possessed. On the other hand, you have another man who became the first person to openly claim to be a conservative from Arizona and ran for president. He was a Candidate in the Republican Party during the 1964 election, which he lost but also caused an uproar in the south fight with states’ right and civil rights. As a politician and an activist these men both had their own definition on civil rights and how it should be handled by the state government and federal government.

Martin Luther King believed that civil rights are human rights and states’ rights that were taken from African Americans and that they had to stand up and take them back. In his Speech the Birth of a New Nation he stated “The oppressor never voluntarily gives freedom to the oppressed. You have to work for it” (MK, 29). He believed that you had to earn those rights back by not stooping to the level of the oppressor but by being the bigger people and act with non-violence. He talked about the country of Ghana and how that country inspired him because they did not act with violence and were still able to take their country back. He shared with the crowed of Detroit “Freedom only comes through persistent revolt, through persistent agitation, through persistently rising up against the system of evil” (MK, 30).
