Mass media and social media are technology all around us. They are ways of a mass communication that reach a limitless amount of people. Media has changed the way the world thinks. Mass media refers to TV, magazines, newspapers, pictures and Radio. Social media refers to any kind of internet logging like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google, amongst others. Mass and social media surround us and tell us what we should be or should do. This can lead to constructive behaviors or it can lead to the destruction of lives caused by how the media relays these messages. Ultimately leaving the diversity of people falling victim to mass and social media. Not one person can make that sole decision. Consequently, changing how people think. Consequentially, changing the way the public looks at presidential candidates.
Mass media has come a long way since 1960. President Nixon first used the media to present himself to the United States citizens. The history channel stated, “The Kennedy-Nixon debates not only had a major impact on the election’s outcome, but ushered in a new era in which crafting a public image and taking advantage of media exposure became essential ingredients of a successful political campaign.” (A&E Television Networks, LLC)
In 1963, polls showed more people were relying on television than reading the newspaper. In 1966, anyone could gain access to government records due to the passing of The Freedom of Information Act. It gives the right to know information about government issues. The media is so impressive that it can influence who we have as the United States President. That appears to have a huge impact on everyone who has access to social or mass media.
We all want to be someone and what happens outside of our bodies has an influence so great that we can’t control what others think but have an enormous impact on how they think it.
