Managing change is an “ongoing process whose objective is to enhance the ability of an organization to participate and respond to developments in its external and internal environments, and to enable employees at all levels to cope with the changes” (Cascio, 2016, p. 6). Change is never easy, but never impossible. It occurs when there is an understanding of the need for change, the vision of where the organization should go, and a commitment to action. Change leaders need to address the question “Why change?” and develop a rationale for the change and a compelling vision of a possible future. “Being dissatisfied with the status quo helps to ready the organization for change” (Cawsey, et al, 2016, p. 106). It is critical to involve every member in the organization, from top to bottom, in the early stage of change to be successful. The goal of the leader is to get each individual to “buy-in” the proposal to get support from them. Getting support from the employees and executive leadership is always a plus to strengthen the proposal. “Leaders also need to understand deeply what is going on inside their organization” (Swink, Melnyk, Cooper, & Hartley, 2014, p. 53).
The organization can implement any of the three recommended actions to address the people management challenges. The first action is to create a Reward/Recognition Program. This is necessary to get the employees engaged, who can transform a company. They can take customer loyalty to new levels, reduce hiring costs, and improve productivity and product quality. Second, the Employee Training and Development Program is vital to the long-term success of the organization. I have examined the significant people management challenges an organization faced, and what the manager can do to meet those challenges to enhance productivity, engagement, and morale. Managers are responsible for optimizing all the resources available to them. When it comes to managing people, however, all managers must be concerned to some degree retention and managing change. Organizations are managed and staffed by people, the most vital of all resources. Therefore, managers must implement ways to retain them my managing change. To experience business success in the 21st century organization, every employee must be included in the change. I will conclude with a quote from Alan Watts, “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”
