Introduction:
For hospitals to reach their peak in the healthcare world they must work to achieve a prestigious credential by the American Nurse's Credentialing Center ( Truth about nursing). In order to receive such a credential, hospitals must fulfill a set of criteria that will take a lot of work and reform within the hospital itself. To receive magnet status hospitals have to express the fourteen forces of magnetism along with the strict list of requirements (Flores, 2007). Magnet status along with everything has its benefits along with its problems. This credential has been researched in depth, and some research feels that certain thing should be changed in order for magnet hospitals to be the best they can possible be. Lastly, there is no doubt that magnet status is of great value because of how it transforms hospitals from great to greater.
What is Magnet Status?
Magnet Status is a credential of organizational acknowledgment of nursing superiority((Nursing world). It is given to hospitals that have satisfied the requirements intended to determine the quality and strength of their nursing (Nursing World). The magnet status award is given to hospitals by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center, which is an associate of the American Nurses Association (The truth about nursing, 2012). This award was started in 1990 as a way to recognize hospitals that offer outstanding nursing care(Hopkins Medicine). Since 1990, out of all 7,569 hospitals in the united states, only 258 of those hospitals have received the honor of magnet status (Hopkins Medicine). Magnet hospitals are named for their potential to attract and retain qualified nurses. Magnet hospitals are facilities that have been certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for promoting positive patient outcomes through best practices in nursing (Upenieks, 2003). The Magnet environment fosters autonomy and professional nursing practice. Research shows that Magnet hospitals have better work environments, a more highly educated nursing workforce, superior nurse-to-patient staffing ratios, and higher nurse satisfaction than non-Magnet hospitals (Aiken, Kelly, & McHugh, 2011). Implementation of that environment requires the ability to create trust, accountability, and open communication in changing times. The American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) organized 14 Forces of Magnetism into 5 Model Components to measure outcomes for the Magnet Recognition program. The first of the five components, Transformational Leadership, encompasses two of the 14 Forces of Magnetism: Quality of Nursing Leadership and Management Style (American Nurses Credentialing Center). The leadership approach best suited for the pursuance of Magnet recognition would be a transformational leadership approach. Nurse executives in a Magnet institution require the ability to foresee the future needs of healthcare, and must devise plans of action to meet those needs. They must communicate, monitor, engage, and inspire others toward the common goal. Management, likewise, has to communicate ideas and monitor progress, but must also be prepared to organize the undertaking and implementation of future pathways.
The history of Magnet Status began in 1992. The American Nurse Credentialing Center first developed of the idea of Magnet Status after extensive research studies were perform during the nursing shortage of the 1980’s. The goal was to find out why some hospitals were able to retain and even recruit nurses during the shortage. It was found that of the 165 hospitals that participated, 41 shared seven core attributes. (Chaffee, Leavitt, & Mason, 2007) These seven attributes were the beginning of what have become the fourteen forces of Magnetism. The attributes or forces are based on nursing standards of care. That is the ability of the hospitals, working with the nursing staff to provide the excellent nursing care. That is care for the patient as well as the nursing staff and the hospital as a whole. The programs first awarded Magnet status in 1994. Since then several hundred have reached Magnet Status with several hundred more in the application process. In 2001 the first international hospital was awarded Magnet status. As with the medical field and even nursing all things must change, this includes the Magnet Program. Their focus on wellness lines up with Healthy People 2020, and their aim to increase patient satisfaction, improve the health of the community, and reduce the cost of health care is commendable. Centura Health 2020 is a solid step in the right direction to improve health care in Colorado and Kansas. The one thing that seems to be missing however is a plan for employee satisfaction and nurse staffing. Although they briefly mention “intensifying their efforts around nursing satisfaction” (Strategic Plan, 2014), there does not appear to be any further details to address the nurse staffing issues or other nursing issues of interest. Research confirms that nurse staffing and patient outcomes are influenced by the culture of the organization. Magnet-designated hospitals provide a culture of quality and are recognized for excellence in patient care, excellence in nursing, and the ability to attract and retain nurses (Huber, 2010). While Centura health is focused on excellence in patient care, they seem to be missing a critical piece of the puzzle. Excellence in nursing and attracting and retaining nurses are factors that are set quality organizations apart from everyone else. The recommendations called for increased opportunities for nurses to be leaders, manager, and executives in the various settings that they are employed. In addition, there was a push for more interdisciplinary collaboration during training as well as in the various levels of professional interactions (IOM, 2011). In practice these recommendations suggest more diverse performance measures, pooling of interdisciplinary funds, organizations supporting nurses in leadership, and encouraging nurses to work with information technology and medical device developers and manufacturers on new products.
A hospital that obtains magnet status displays “knowledge and expertise for the delivery of nursing care globally” (ANCC, 2008). Magnet status means displaying professionalism in models of care with nursing leadership, organizational structure and evidence based practice. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) provides a model to help aid visually with understanding the components a hospital must achieve to be considered magnet. This 5 component model was designed “to provide a framework for nursing practice and research in the future, as well as serving as a road map for organizations seeking to achieve Magnet recognition” (ANCC, 2008).
The shortage of registered nurses (RNs) in the United States has been a cyclical topic dating back to the 1960s. Only recently have employers in certain regions of the nation stated a decline in the demand for RNs. Consequently, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2014) report on 2012-2013 Enrollment and Graduations in Baccalaureate and Graduate Programs in Nursing, American nursing schools denied admission to 79,659 qualified applicants from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs in 2012. The reported decrease in job availability and rejected admissions has left many individuals to question if the nursing shortage still exists. On the other hand, some experts project that the United States will be short more than one million RNs by 2020 (Dolan, 2011). Although some parts of the country are in less of a demand than others, it is undeniable that there is a national shortage of RNs.

Because of the high demand for excellent nursing care, the IOM has declared the recommendations for the future of nursing. It is very fascinating the most of the universities are having online courses for nurses to get their higher education, while nurses are struggling between the work and home. Currently, most of the hospitals in the United States are moving towards magnet status, which requires higher educated nurses. In this situation, it is a blessing for nurses to attain their higher education through online courses even for associate RNs to become BSN.

The magnetic devices that are claimed to be therapeutic include: magnetic bracelets, insoles, knee and wrist bands, back and neck braces, and even pillows and mattresses. Magnetic therapy has become so common that a Google search for “magnets and pain relief” returns over 700,000 results. Some advocates of magnetic therapy claim magnets to be a strong alternative to conventional pain medication. But are magnets a legitimate form of medicine? Besides the use of magnets in everyday life—in televisions, refrigerators and computers—magnets have acquired a medical reputation for relieving pain. Magnets are said to increase circulation to problem areas, reduce swelling and aid in recovery. As of 2007, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCAM) had performed a number of preliminary scientific studies with no clear results on the efficacy of the healing powers of magnetic devices. Just as important, NCAM, continues to pronounce magnet therapy as a mystical form of relief that is very real but cannot yet be explained. Still, magnet merchants dominate internet searches. As explained by Cepeda, Carr and Sarquis, “…it is crystal clear that billions of dollars [$300 million in the U.S. alone] have already been spent on magnet therapy, or perhaps, wasted on magnet therapy. Magnet therapy is an alternative treatment which has been gaining ground in recent years. Magnet therapy is related to biomagnetism which is a branch of biology that studies the effects of magnetism in living beings as well as magnetism and electromagnetism. Many experiments have been conducted in the world. Over time, practitioners have kept records of what has and has not worked. Precautionary measures are now known to use with magnet therapy. It has been known to promote magnet therapy as a very safe and effective treatment when used correctly.

An object can be found directly where it is itself magnetic, or where it may displace material which is otherwise uniformly magnetic. In some cases an object may be found indirectly when it produces a magnetic anomaly as a consequence of it being buried or emplaced. Objects of search may involve a man-made iron or steel objects, an archaeological feature such as a brick, pottery or tomb or an intentionally buried magnet used for relocation purposes.
