To what extent do you consider Macbeth to be a tragic hero? I intend to explore Shakespeares Macbeth in an attempt to determine weather or not Macbeth meets the criteria of a tragic hero.
The first example we come across in the play of Macbeth being a tragic hero is him being of high birth, in act one scene three after Macbeth wins in battle king Duncan comes to visit him at his castle, whilst there Duncan acknowledges that Macbeths position is needed close to the kings, this relationship with the king fills the first criteria of being a tragic hero, High birth.
The next example we see of a tragic hero is good qualities, Macbeth has these good qualities as we see in the form of him being a good strong solider in war, this is proved with act one scene one where Macbeth just won a great battle by helping the Scottish army and so is praised;” For brave Macbeth – well he deserves that name” this quote shows the people around him think he is a great man, this in turn helps Macbeth for fill the tragic hero criteria by leaves of having good qualities.

A tragic hero is a person of noble birth or potentially heroic qualities. The role of a tragic hero is common in many of Shakespeare's plays such as Macbeth. The character of Macbeth is a classic example of a Shakespearean tragic hero. A tragic hero often has a noble background. This person is predominantly good, but suffers a terrible fate falling out due to glitches in their personality. The tragic hero has a monstrous downfall, brought out by their fatal flaw. Macbeth is named a tragic hero because he learns through suffering, he is isolated, and he exhibits personal courage in his acceptance of death.
In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth is a classic example of a tragic hero who is constantly struggling with his fate. In the opening scene of the play Macbeth receives a prophecy from three witches. They proclaim that he will be the thane of Cawdor. He responds by saying, “By Sinel’s death I know that I am thane of Glamis/ but how of Cawdor”(I, iii, 70-73)? At first, he does not realize to earn this title what he must do, but when he realizes he is taken aback. His bewilderment prefigures his perpetual struggle with his fate. Macbeth also is excessively ambitious which constantly affects him throughout the play. He is too determined to become king and will kill anyone to ensure that this will transpire. Macbeth’s struggle and ambition make him the quintessence of tragic hero.
Macbeth exhibits most, if not all, of the classic traits of a Shakespearean tragic hero almost flawlessly. From his rise to greatness to his ultimate destruction and death, he is most certainly a tragic hero.

Duncan declares, “No more that thane of Cawdor shall deceive our bosom interest. Go pronounce his present death and with his former title greet Macbeth” (I.ii.72-74). Macbeth's valiant war efforts lead him to victory over the Scottish army earning him the position of Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth, although knowing very well Duncan is dead by his own doing, wishes that the King could be woken up from his eternal slumber. These are the thoughts and feelings of a good man who committed a deed that would characterize him as evil (Booth). Macbeth’s ambition overpowers his conscious decision of right from wrong.
Greed is a quality that many have, but too much of it can be catastrophic. In the tragedy Macbeth by William Shakespeare, the character Macbeth has a tragic flaw that leads to his eventual downfall. A tragic hero is generally defined as someone who has great potential; someone who is born into nobility and could have a great future. However, they are doomed to fail and often die because of a tragic flaw. These characters usually learn a lesson from their deeds. However, it is usually too late for them to have a happy ending. Macbeth is not a tragic hero because a man is responsible for his own actions and this is the case with Macbeth. By deceiving and murdering his friends, he proves he is not a hero. He lets himself be corrupted by the prophecies of the witches. This weakness demonstrates that he lacks the qualities to be a hero (Johnson 1).
MACBETH AS A TRAGIC HERO Tragic heroes are within everyone, but cannot be fully exposed or understood without the essential tragic qualities. One must be a potentially noble character who has heroic qualities and has respect and admiration from the society. Consequently, they are essentially great. Also within the character must be a flaw or weakness that leads to a fall. Lastly, one is required to possess an element of suffering and redemption.
Tragic heroes, who destined for a serious downfall, are the protagonist of a dramatic tragedy. A tragic hero is usually a great hero, who gets the most respect from other people; on the other hand, a tragic hero can also lose everything he gained because of his mistakes. His downfall is the result of a wrong judgment, a flaw which might combined with fated and external forces. The downfall can cause the tragic hero to suffer for the rest of his life. In many literary works, the downfall of the tragic heroes usually happen in their highest point. In the same way, Macbeth is a tragic hero in the play called “The Tragedy of Macbeth” which is written by a legendary writer, William Shakespeares. Macbeth is a great general who gained many respect from the people and even the king. In the highest point of his life, because of seeking for greater power, it created Macbeth’s downfall. Macbeth, a tragic hero, causes suffering for himself and others by committing murders and creating distress, which are the negative effects of seeking for a greater power.

Throughout the play, it is easy to begin to noticing common trends in the behavior of Macbeth. His judgement quickly becomes impaired when King Duncan grants him a new title “Thane of Cawdor”. With this new power granted to him, overambitious Macbeth becomes murderous. In order to claim power he murders King Duncan, turning Scotland into a dangerous place. With the much loved king gone, the kingdom is left under merciless Macbeth’s control. Of course his horrible actions do not go without consequences and soon Macbeth pays for his actions both mentally and physically. Over the course of the play, Macbeth shows common characteristics of a Shakespearean. Leaving us with the question is Macbeth a tragic hero?
When William Shakespeare created "Macbeth" he included in the title character all the key elements of a tragic hero. Macbeth has a decline from his good standing, reaches a lowest point and soon after turns himself around, the epiphany, and finally rises in his morals and standing; however it is too late and his death is apparent. Macbeth's decline begins when he heeds the witches prophecies. His lowest point is reached when he decides that life does not matter to him anymore, soon followed by his epiphany when he decides that he will fight honorably even if it means his death. He then raises his moral standing and regains his honor. Through well written literature, William Shakespeare is able to portray Macbeth as a typical tragic hero.
The tragic hero is a very specific character and must meet several criterias. This tragic character must not be an extremely virtuous individual that instead of the audience feeling pity or fear for their downfall, they feel anger. The character must as well not be so evil that the audience wishes their downfall, simply for the sake of justice. This tragic hero is best described as someone ‘’who is neither outstanding in virtue and righteousness; nor is it through badness or villainy of his own that he falls into misfortune, but rather through some flaw", Macbeth fitting this character perfectly. He is introduced to us as a military hero who has proven himself in battle time and time again, but still an average man, easily comparable to a modern day soldier.
