Lord of the flies was about a group of boys getting stranded on an island. There was basically to groups I like to identify them as the “civilized group” and the “savage ones”. In this paper I will tell you examples of civilization and savagery in lord of the flies. From the conch to the pig head to the boys that are there .There are mean examples of this theme so let’s get started.
In the book lord of the flies all of the boys started of civil but some ended up being savage .to start off civilized means the stage of human social development and organization that is considered most advanced. The word savage means the quality of being fierce or cruel.in lord of the flies there are mean examples of civilization.
The first example is we see civilization as the boy’s sense of right and wrong the first thing Ralph and Piggy suggest is they should have a meeting .Then Ralph suggests that they use order and communication. Ralph told the boys they must have "hands up, like at school". Piggy takes names and this represents civilization. That leads us into the conch. The conch represented civilization because it kept order .the conch was found by ralph .Ralph then decided the conch would be used for talking in meetings. It was like a system .the conch was used to keep order in a meeting. They used the conch by only talking when they had it so they wouldn’t be talking over each other .this is a good example because they are being civilized and not wild .
But as the story goes on, the conch loses its power and so does the island’s civilized manner is lost because the boys descend into savagery. The book says “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist.” With the conch being destroyed we know that the civilization that was left has been destroyed right along with it .This is one of the most memorable parts of the whole book. As the boys rampage through the island, I believe that the author is implying that humans have the natural tendency to descend into/revert to savagery and cruelty once all civilization is lost!
There is evidence in both Lord of the Flies and A Separate Peace that display the savagery of man. In Lord of the Flies there is savagery found when the choir boys and most of the bigguns separate from Ralph’s authority and form their own tribe. In A Separate Peace, savagery is found in unnamed characters during Leper’s war experience - he feels such a need to escape from evil and savagery in the war that he takes the risk and actually does. In both of these novels, the archetype and motif of savagery is present in young boys, ultimately resulting in the downfall and degenerating of man.
Lord of flies is about a group of schoolboys, who got stuck on uninhabited island after a plane crash. On island they struggle with savagery and civilazation while they are waiting to be rescued. William Golding gives the examples of elements what makes society ‘civilized’ which contains rules, laws and morality. He shows the consequences of what happens if we don’t follow the rules which he lead to savagery in his book. This civilazation in book also can be a metaphor for a government, its creation.
Meaning, their true nature will be exposed. That nature is surely savage. For example, when you watch little kids, you tend to notice that if one has a toy, the other will start a fight just to get a toy. Since the kids don’t know the difference between right and wrong, they’re just expressing themselves naturally, which happens to be savagery. Here is a quote from Golding from chapter 4 of his book that proves that rules are the basis of civilization.

William Golding creates a complex environment that delves into the concept that there is evil within all of us. It explores the beast-like savagery that comes from human nature's instinct to survive. Golding portrays this through multiple young characters’ brush with fear. He explores the results of the absence of authority and structure and shows how they change without any guidance from society or adults.
When the characters in "Lord of the Flies" begin acting savage they go so far that it results in the destruction of their environment as well as the destruction of their civilized minds.
William Golding’s novel ‘The Lord of The flies’ presents us with a group of English boys who are isolated on a desert island, left to try and retain a civilised society. In this novel Golding manages to display the boys slow descent into savagery as democracy on the island diminishes.
Loss of innocence occurs throughout the novel. Piggy realizes the change between innocence and savagery when he questions, “What are we? Human? Or animal? Or savages?” (Golding 79). Simon soon follows when he states, “What I mean is…...maybe it’s only us” (Golding 89). Both boys realize the true beast is the group and they end up paying for the uncontrolled actions of others with their lives. The drastic change between civilization on the island causes the group to become savage and feed off of violence. When Golding writes, “Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy” (Golding 202), Ralph shows his understanding that they need adult authority in their lives and Piggy was the one trying to warn him. Ralph starts to think, “The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away” (Golding 91), when the group starts to lose innocence along with civilization. Over millions of years, man has transformed from a savage, simple creature to a highly developed, complex, and civil being. In Lord of the Flies, the author William Golding shows how, under certain circumstances, man can become savage. During nuclear war, a group of British schoolboys crash land on an uninhabited island to escape. Ralph the elected leader, along with Piggy and Simon, tries to maintain civilization, while Jack and his group of choir boys turned hunters slowly become savages obsessed with killing. Through characters’ action and dialogue, Golding illustrates the transformation of civil schoolboys into bloodthirsty savages.
Civilization is compromised when rules become unnecessary and the children?s state of mind has changed for the worst. In Lord of the Flies, the conch shell and signal fire represent civilization, but as the children lose interest in having a leader, and following rules, these objects lose their meaning and savagery takes over. ?We may stay here till we die,? (pg.9) was a very powerful quote, because from the beginning of the novel, Golding is foreshadowing their future on the island. Another example of this is their painted faces and tribal dances, which happen when they?ve killed a pig. A force greater than they can control seems to take over their humanity, and because children haven?t been exposed to think for themselves, they don?t know between right and wrong. Therefore, society hasn?t conditioned them to be evil, but the evil resides within them naturally.
The conch was the final representation of society, and with its destruction it shows the final transformation from a well-mannered group of boys into a group of savages. The conch shell was found by Ralph and Piggy in the first chapter of the book and was instantly used as a horn to call an “assembly”. Ever since the conch was used the first time it was always a vital role in the book, bringing together the boys in many situations Up until the very end of the book the conch shell serves as a glue for their civilization, being a vital part not only in calling all of the boys’ meetings, but also during them with it acting as a “hot seat” where if whoever had the conch shell was the one doing the talking. Despite all of this the conch was still destroyed by a member of Jack’s following,Roger. Roger had been very sadistic during the entire book, and this was at the peak of savagery in the book. “See? See? That’s what you’ll get! I meant that! There isn’t a tribe for you any more! The conch is gone—” . With the conch being destroyed the boys’ ties to civilization are completely gone revealing the truth that Golding attempted to communicate in his book; True human nature is

The group of boys are obliged to find a way to survive until they are rescued, in which they are faced with the challenge of making realistic decision. As the novel advances, the characters begin to show their various personalities,
