Yasmine Khoshbakht The History Of Lipstick Humans have been using pigments for war, and spiritually purposes since the beginning of time. Later, these uses of pigment went from practical to cosmetic use. Through the years, humans all over the globe began using pigment for beauty and hierarchical purposes. One of the main, and first uses of pigment for appearance was, lipstick. This report will detail the history of lipstick from ancient to modern times, as well as delve into the societal aspects of why it was used and became popular. Lipstick, or lip pigments were not necessarily invented at one place, but adapted by several ancient civilizations around the same time periods. In Constantinople, jeweled crystal cosmetics containers suggesting upper class use of lip paints had returned. In some Irish texts they refer the use of herbal dyes to create red tinted lips. Though it wasn’t until the Middle Ages that lipstick became religiously criticised. Makeup was seen as altering a woman’s face and challenging God of his workmanship. There was however exceptions like using a rose or lily lip tint because those colors symbolized purity. Women utilized sheep fat and mashed rose roots to create such tint. In Italy, lipstick still remained a social status symbol, and bright pink lip rouge became a sign of wealth while, earthy red was seen as lower class. After the Crusades, Middle Eastern approaches to lipstick were introduced and the rich used alchemists to concoct custom lip rouge.
