Life on the Road It’s fair to say that life on the road is something most people do not desire, as a way to live out their days; but a young man named Chris McCandless believed it was necessary to avoid the venomous grips of society. McCandless goes as far as to venture out to the rest of the United States and even crossing borders to achieve his true destination, Alaska. He shows us living such a life can hold many unique and wonderful experiences. Consequently, he also shows us the difficulties that most do not expect upon leaving for such a journey. Many speak about the advantages, like the freedom they enjoy, and the wondrous relationships formed along the way; but even so, some disadvantages outweigh the advantages, like the
It creates such a unique situation for everyone that you would have never known otherwise. Such was the case of Ronald Franz and McCandless, when their paths crossed in January of 1992. In the text, a bit of dialogue was, “When he returned to McCandless’s camp and launched into the self-improvement pitch, though, McCandless cut him off abruptly “Look, Mr Franz,” he declared, “you don’t need to worry about me. I have a college education. I’m not a destitute. I’m living like this by choice” (51). By putting this near the beginning of their encounters, Krakauer is trying to get across a fast-growing relationship between Franz and McCandless. Franz is eager to help out McCandless when he mentions he needs money for his trip to Alaska, but has his offer rejected as McCandless is determined to go to San Diego alone to work for it. Roughly a month later, McCandless reunites with Franz and their relationship deepens, as Franz starts to see him as his own grandson, wanting to adopt him. All of this happening within the span of roughly three months. Like McCandless, I have also formed friendships with others that resulted in nearly becoming family. It wasn’t adoption, but we became so close, it was almost like I’d grown up with them all my life, and am viewed as another daughter. this was all because I had decided to strike up a conversation
He wasn’t too fond of truly becoming close to others. Krakauer states, “McCandless was thrilled to be on his way north, and he was relieved as well-relieved that he had again evaded the impending threat of human intimacy, of friendship, and all the messy emotional baggage that comes with it” (55). This had also occurred a few months prior in Niland Slabs, where he met Burres and Tracy. He had made friends there, and Tracy had developed feelings for him, but he rebuffed any of her advancements; he didn’t want to get involved with others, not after having left home for his journey. To him, having had friends and family that he left behind, he loved people, but he didn’t want to be close to them in any way other than purely being around them. Growing up with a difficult family relationship, such as McCandles’s, which caused him to push people away; it’s easy to relate to him in that aspect. For a majority of my life, up until I was around 13, I did almost exactly as he, when it came to being around others; I enjoyed their company, but I pushed everyone away and only felt relief from doing so. I was more than happy with how it was back then, but now I’m not much different; I’ve learned to accept a few people into my
...fe for oneself. McCandless primary tragic flaw being his unwillingness to form long-term relations brought him both to the happiest moment of his life, but also to his demise. McCandless never had a problem with people, but rather with the status quo of society, the idea that a man or a woman has to live inside of a coordinate plane. McCandless left home and went on his adventure simply for his own well being, he achieved both what he wanted to accomplish while learning a valuable lesson along the way. He learned that happiness must be shared, and while everyone has his or her flaws, it is important to let these go. Christopher McCandless should teach people the importance of following your dreams, and the importance of enjoying the natural serenity of life.
Drunk driving, sleeping at the wheel, and loss of control of a vehicle could be a thing of the past when it comes to new innovations being made towards self-driving cars. When one thinks of a “self-driving” car, it means not having to pay attention to the actual driving and going about putting make-up on or playing on your phone while the car takes you where you want to go, sounds completely sci-fi, but it is likely to happen in the near future. With advances in technology, the car is able to use satellites, cameras, and sensors to take the driver where he or she needs to go. Many companies are researching, manufacturing, and testing different
...elligence to help him last an extended period of time in the Alaskan wilderness. In truth, McCandless was someone who wanted to find himself. He wanted to get away from a life in which he could not find fulfilment, which is something many others would be able to relate to. Although most people would not go to such extremes to find fulfilment, everyone has a different way of finding happiness and going after what their heart truly desires. For McCandless, his desire was to live out in the wild. Unfortunately, this man of great character did not succeed in getting out alive. However, that does not change the fact that he tried. McCandless knew what he wanted for himself and he persisted, regardless of the obstacles he faced. He put an incredible amount of effort into accomplishing his goals and never gave up, and that is why Christopher McCandless is someone to admire.
“John died in his sleep. He was warm, comfortable, and doing 70 miles per hour on the motorway”(Fatigue:THINK!:Roadsafety. (N.d.). Retrieved from http://think.direct.gov.uk/fatigue.html). Should drowsy driving be mandated as a criminal offense in the state of California? Few people realize the explicit dangers of drowsy driving. Consider the following scenario: Darkness surrounds your car on the drive home after a late night at the office. There is no light on the two-lane highway except for occasional flashes from the headlights of oncoming traffic. Your eyelids are heavy. You yawn. Your head begins to bob. As you shake your head from side to side trying
Driving. While I haven’t had the greatest experiences with driving related problems; I’ve run into some pretty funny ones. When I was about four years old my family was over at my grandpa’s putting in a well for him. I of course was sitting in the unattended van on the top of the hill in the back seat. While many people would think that it was completely safe and there’s nothing to worry about they are wrong. You see I was a clever little toddler and could at that time unbuckle herself and climb over the center console right into the front seat. Also being the genius child that I was I managed to switch the car from park to neutral and begin to roll down the hill. Now I don 't remember my mom and the other adults running towards the van to
Over the course of time. Street racing has been allowed in the main streets or highways with minimal surveillance or any consequences at all. It almost seemed like no one was taking action in what escalated into a huge problem this year of 2017. Luckily there is various ways to help minimize the negative affects it's having in these communities. A solution to what continues to concern many can be treated as a crime. As humans we know what's right from wrong and people tend to avoid situations that can be considered a crime. The seriousness of the consequences is what everyone fears, no one wants to have a bad record, they want to be “clean.”Another way this rebellious act can continue to decrease is by having strict life changing consequences, example if you get caught street racing then you will be charged with a conviction similar to a Dui.
Whether it is a text massage from love one or a bite of a sandwich, it is not so important than a human life. Distracted driving is an epidemic, so more tough laws should be implemented. The law for distracted driving should be tough just like a driving under influence. Distracting driving is a killer on the road, it should be banned because, it is the number one killer of the U.S. teenager in the road, not only the teenager in the road, but also cause a collision which is often fatal, and some incident were driver or one who involve on an accident became disable. Distraction is an involvement of driver where his or hers eye or mind are engage and performing on other things rather than driving, such as while talking on
A driver is sitting on the interstate and his phone begins to his phone begins to vibrate, which lets him know that a text message has been sent to him. It could be a notification from his brother about an upcoming birthday party or an important message from the driver’s mother. Traffic is going to move soon, but it would only take a couple seconds to send a response. The driver starts to chooses to respond and traffic starts to flow. Soon after, the car in front of him stops suddenly and there is a crash. Texting and driving is a very common and dangerous act for teens and adults and needs to be stopped because it is a financially costly behavior, it puts the driver and others in danger, and it causes trouble and heartache for the affected families.
There is a high percentage of people that spend a majority of their day sitting behind the wheel of a vehicle. Whether it is commuting to work, taking the kids to school, running errands, or simply going out to eat one may feel that their car has become a second home. With so much time spent behind the wheel, drivers become comfortable and incorporate distracting activities while trying to remain focused on the road. Our inability to put our cell phones away while driving is inexcusable. Drivers who choose to use mobile devices are endangering people’s lives and property with associated risks that are not acceptable. No one distracted driver is better than the next. Do to rising accidents
Distracted driving caused by cell phone use can often lead to injury or death. There were 6,000 deaths and half a million injuries in one year from distracted driving. According to the advertisement, a cell phone is just as deadly as a gun. The goal of the ad makers is to try and stop cell phone use while driving on the road. The ad makers have certain problems while trying to convey their message to a primarily young audience. The first is that many young teen drivers don’t believe that the accident or crash will ever happen to them. Another problem facing the ad makers is that this idea they are presenting seems to be a very old one, and young teens have become very desensitized, because they’ve heard the speech or seen the ad so many times,
Driving to work in your car you see traffic starting to back up which is not good, because you’re already running a little behind. A sign reads “left lane open, only.” Slowly making your way along you see the cause; An accident. Four cars piled up, and there are numerous emergency vehicles present. It looks bad. Finally breaking through, you make it in to work to turn on the news to find out the accident was caused by a driver texting on their cell phone. Two fatalities and three were rushed to the hospital under serious conditions. Unfortunately, this depiction occurs more than often you may see or hear and needs to be stopped. Mobile device use while operating a motor vehicle should be made illegal. It should be categorized with driving under
People around the world are constantly moving from place to place. Whether that place is work, a restaurant, or home, people require a means of transportation in order to arrive at a desired destination safely and efficiently. One of the most used means of transportation today are cars. Cars play an important role in the world’s economy by transporting goods and people. Automobiles have come a long way since Ford’s first Model T, and the auto industry plans to further enhance the technology and capabilities of the cars that drive on our roads. New technological advancements like rear-view camera, self parking, and auto braking have greatly improved the overall safety of cars today. However, one of the most talked about ideas are autonomous
A question that I commonly encounter both in my office practice and in the nursing home has to do with the safety of a parent or other older adult as a driver. Rather than the result of some considered review of the overall health and well-being of the person in question, this instead presents as an emergent and sometimes clandestine request such as, “What can I do to keep my dad from driving?”
McCandless was a fearless human being. I think that most of the people’s ideologies and personalities have to do with how they were raised by the parents and everything that was taught to them. When a lack of love exists from a parent towards his child, a hate can be created without knowing it. McCandless could have gone away from society to escape reality or, for being in a place where he could find himself at peace. Either one, we can assume that he obviously had different ideas about civilization; the idea of having a life full of danger and adventure inspired and excited him.
In the late 1900’s a massive trend took over America. Smoking became a huge hit especially among teenagers. It was cool, and those that smoked sat at the top of the social ladder in high schools across America. The success of smoking and its popularity among teenagers was due to the public perception about smoking. At the time of its success, the public perception was wildly positive. There were claims that smoking had great effects on individual health and that there were no negative side effects. There is nothing more telling about the American perception of smoking than the movie Grease, where the nice girl becomes queen of the school after a lifestyle change that includes the addition of smoking. However, America has changed. Americans
