Leadership is a desirable trait by many and is needed to be successful within an organization. However, leadership comes in many forms. There are leaders that contain the gift of interpersonal communication, where an individual can effectively work with others to build teams or resolve conflicts. Then there are those leaders that have the innovation to guide the team in the right direction. An ideal leader would encompass both of these qualities. It would be accurate to assume that behavioral traits can be a good indicator in predicting those that possess the qualities to be an effective leader. Communication is how individuals often convey their thoughts, ideas, feelings, understandings and is a two-way process. Interpersonal communication is how individuals “transfer meaning between and among each other” (Robbins & Judge, 2009, p. 355). Not only does a person need to effectively utilize their transmission method to send their message, the receiving party needs to acknowledge what the sender is communicating, as well as the intent. Even if the message is well intended, if the receiver does not sufficiently interpret the meaning, then there will be miscommunication between both parties. This can result in unintended conflict and misunderstanding, which can be unfavorable to a relationship pending the situation. This is why it is necessary to understand the various methods of interpersonal communication and how miscommunication can occur.

Nonverbal communication is visible body cues presented by an individual that may or may not be deliberate. “Basically it is sending and receiving messages in a variety of ways without the use of verbal codes (words)” (“Non-verbal Communication,” n.d., para. 1). This can be seen in body language such as hand gestures or raising of eyebrows. Personal space and eye contact are other actions that are observed during communication. Just as with oral communication, if the receiver did not interpret the nonverbal communication as initially proposed, then there is a communication hindrance. However, the sender needs to attempt to be consciously aware of their body language as well to deter miscommunication from occurring. Living in a society where there are numerous cultures present, it is particularly important that there is an understanding that not all cultures have the same meaning behind the body language of others. I personally experienced the importance of acknowledging these differences while deployed in Iraq. Personal space was not customary there like it is in America. I soon learned that it was disrespectful to step back to achieve that personal space like what is expected
Communications generally occur in body languages: how the individuals interpret each other. Her essay is an event that is reoccurring more and more lately. The event results in a failure in marriage. In today’s society more and more people are splitting up or having divorces due to miscommunications. An important aspect of communication and interactions with others is nonverbal communication; its importance multiplied across cultures. This is because we have grown up looking for nonverbal cues when the verbal messages are ambiguous and unclear, especially with cultures using the same nonverbal communication in a different way. Since nonverbal behavior is learned as we grow up in a certain culture, our ideas about what is normal and appropriate will vary in different cultures. Different cultures will interpret gestures, posture, proxemics, silence and other nonverbal cues in a variety ways creating a unique nonverbal language within cultures.
Thus, a leader may be defined by certain qualities and skills, as well as the demonstrated ability to use certain task-oriented and relational-oriented behaviors that may be dependent on a situation, or simply the desire to accomplish a specific task or goal; furthermore, a leader may also be defined by power along with power’s use or misuse. According to many followers, the most desirable leadership traits are honesty, forward-thinking, competency, inspiration, and intelligence (Shead, 2016). Amongst the follower defined leadership traits, honesty was identified as the essential leadership quality that causes people to follow a leader; thus, the courage to admit failure is the most reliable sign that a leader is honest and accountable to the follower (Shead, 2016). Ultimately, in behavioral science a leader is defined by effectiveness, and, unfortunately, behavioral science is still attempting to define effectiveness by a single leadership
Nonverbal behavior is channeled by norms and most of us abide by them without being aware of them. Physical appearance, gesture and body movement, face and eye behavior, vocal behavior, personal space, touch, scent/smell, and time are all forms of nonverbal communication behavior. Norms differ amongst various cultures, ethnic, and geographic groups. There are endless ways and forms to violate nonverbal norms, and by doing so can lead to a barrier in communication, which are problematic to distinguish.
Miscommunication is a struggle that lives within the world everyday. Being able to understand what another person is trying to convey is an essential part of the way humans interact with one another. When a message is not translated correctly from person to person conflict arises and heated battles rage within a relationship; whether it is a mother and daughter, or two quarreling lovers, or strangers upon the street. All humans are created differently, with diverse upbringings, perspectives, and mindsets. Particular forms of communications may mean different things to various people. When talking about the concept of miscommunications, one must also address the concept of communication itself.

Communication is the process of conveying information to each another using words, actions, or by writing the information down to be read by another person. Nonverbal communication is rich in meaning. Everyone communicates through nonverbal gestures and motions. I realized that you can decipher a lot from an individual or individuals by just paying close attention to what they do, and that words are not really necessary. Watching two people interacting, I figured that they are really close by their space communication, eye language, and body movements.
