Injustice! Blacks were not treated fairly. Jefferson achieves his goal of becoming a man at the conclusion of the story. He achieves this goal by speaking out, opening up to others, and accepting his death. At the beginning Jefferson didn't feel that he was a man, because he has been called a hog multiple times to try to prove to the jurors that he wasn't in the right state of mind when the shooting took place. As a result he became psychologically in tune with the discriminatory label he was given during his trial .

His goal set by others, such as Miss Emma and Grant (towards the end), was to prove the white attorney wrong for calling him a hog. He achieved this goal by speaking out by talking to Grant freely. Grant was the first person that Jefferson was able to communicate with by actually speaking his mind and expressing his thoughts. After his mental slum, Jefferson is reached by Grant after their argument and Jefferson said," Hog knows things." he continues, " They gon' kill me Christmas time."
