In Defense of Love: Why Catholics Should be for Gay Marriage

The topic of homosexual marriages has been a very hotly contested issue and has in recent years become an even more heavily debated topic, particularly in the Catholic Church. Now, Catholics have always had a very definite stance on homosexuality and more importantly homosexual marriage. They have always had the belief that marriage is, and should remain, exclusively between a man and a woman. I too, being a Catholic myself, held this belief for quite some time until I actually looked into scripture, and I discovered that the Catholic Church has been thinking backwards. Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, homosexual marriage has always been deemed an abomination by scripture, tradition, and holy fathers, but through scripture and an unmarred perspective on Catholicism it is clear that the Catholic Church should be in support gay marriage.

Before one delves into the Church’s stance on gay marriage it is necessary to define some key terms. Catholic.org defines homosexual behavior as, “Acts intended to arouse or stimulate a sexual response regarding a person of the same sex.” This is nothing new, as the Church has always condemned any and all homosexual acts. For many years the Catholic Church has told us that the only calling for gays is a life of chastity (Brom). We are told that it just is not natural for a man to love a man or a woman to love a woman; it violates Natural Law, which gives the foundation for almost all moral standards, forbidding murder, kidnapping, and adultery (Homosexuality). Breaking natural law would go against the foundation of the Catholic faith. “The natural sex partner for a man is a woman, and the natural sex partner for a woman is a man” (Homosexuality).
