The weird sisters plan to meet Macbeth and then misguide him.We are already introduced to the tragic protagonist Macbeth via the witches.He is the target of the threesome who have almost already seen into his soul.The readers are left bewildered as to why Macbeth has been singled out in this manner?the witches have realized that it will easier to ‘wraught’ with his ’mettle’ as he is the more pliable and weaker victim than Banquo.
Another prominent factor in the scene is the lurking evil and darkness.There is no light present.The images of thunder , lightening , rain , sunset and fog are all associated with darkness.In the play all sinister and dastardly deeds will be commited either in the dark or when there is no light.There are references to a grey cat Greymalkin and a toad Paddock who call the witches.These are the attendant spirits to the devil and to the witches who are at their beck-and-call and need their support to carry out their vile conquests.The toad was believed to be another form of Satin as described by Milton in a ‘ Paradise lost ‘ where the Devil took upon the form of a toad to tempt Eve initially.

It is a dark and gloomy play, as the main character, Macbeth, gets a taste for evil and kills the king of Scotland, King Duncan, in order to become king himself. After this moment there is a rapid increase of evil in him, as he starts to kill more and more people who upset him or are a threat to the throne. One of the play’s most important scenes is when Macbeth murders King Duncan, this scene is essential to the remainder of the play and how it unfolds. This murder scene contributes to the play in terms of plot development, it exposes and develops the major theme of how people can turn evil when confronted with power, and it reveals the true character of Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth.
This scene sets the atmosphere for the rest of the play. If this scene was not there it would be difficult for the audience to understand how later scenes are linked or how these three women can tell Macbeth’s future. Also if elements of the supernatural were not used in Act 1 Scene 1, as they have been, the witches could not be shown as sinister and evil. These two elements of horror, “sinister” and “evil” would later be used to explain the cause of the three witches’ behaviour further on in the play.
That excerpt shows how the witches twist and play with Macbeth's mind and feelings. By the end of the Apparition's lines, Macbeth is convinced he can not be killed by anyone, and so grows in confidence till seething and almost rupturing with it. It also shows Shakespeare's use of equivocation and how, unless certain lines are studied, their true, if vague, meaning cannot be seen or understood.
Act 2 scene 2 is the most violent and intense part of Macbeth although we do no actually witness the murder of King Duncan. It is interesting that Shakespeare chooses to have Macbeth kill Duncan offstage. We can only guess why he wrote the scene that way, I think that Shakespeare wanted to focus not on the murder but on Macbeth’s reaction to it; the bloody details supplied by the audiences imaginations will be much worse than anything that could be done onstage. It is also the most crucial part of the play; it is the first of many murders. This scene takes place at night; I feel the darkness represents what is unnatural, cruel and evil. Everything that happens within the play appears to revolve around this particular scene. Not only is this important because it contains the murderous act, it also conveys to the audience the rapid disintegration of the relationship between the two main characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
The witches influence Macbeth in his achievements and awaken his ambitions. They give him a false sense of security with their apportions of truths. The witches are the ones who made the idea of killing Duncan into Macbeth’s mind. They also told him that he would become thane of Cawdor and later would become king of Scotland. The first scene of the play is very short but gives us a good impression on the play. Instead of Shakespeare starting the play showing Macbeth we firstly see the three weird looking witches who introduce us to a dark and evil story line. The opening line, ‘when shall we meet again in thunder lightening or rain’ It trys to draw our attention to witchcraft. In Shakespeare time witchcraft was a great enemy and everyone became captivated by these suspicious witches. In Shakespeare time there was such thing as a ‘witch hunt’ when many people were accused of being witches, the witches were stereo typed as being dark, evil, powers, dress in black and can make things float. In Shakespeare time if you were assumed of being a witch you would be tied up tightly and thrown into the river. If you sunk then you were innocent and if you floated you were a witch. In witches soliloquy there use of language and thinking aloud shows us the witches are bad but powerful.

In the opening scene of the play, the entrance of the three witches depicts the first presence of supernatural in Macbeth. The presence of the supernatural forces of the witches was accompanied by the dark, gloomy and thunderous ambience, perhaps functioning as a foreshadowing of future events that involves evil, wickedness and darkness. This is important as it gives the audience an idea of what might happen later in the play. For example, we see that later on in the play, Macbeth turned evil and wicked, killing an old and honourable King Duncan and a loyal friend, Banquo. I take particular note of the significance of darkness as it was later used by Macbeth when he calls upon the "seeling Night" (Act III. Scene ii. Line 46) which `makes clear vision impossible', as a way to cover up his evil deeds.
