In today's competitive marketplace, all firms are seeking ways to improve their overall performance. One such method of improvement, recently adopted by many firms, is benchmarking. Benchmarking is a technique used to evaluate internal business processes. "In this analysis, managers determine the firm's critical processes and outputs, baseline those processes, then compare the performance of each process against a standard outside the industry" (Bounds, Yorks, Adams, & Ranney 1994). As IT budgets are limited, process owners and IT departments need to decide how to divide their spending on efficiency and flexibility enhancing IT capabilities to optimally support the execution of business processes. In past few years, companies and industries of various sizes have become aware that they need to improve business processes such as product development, order fulfilment, planning, distribution, and customer service. So everybody is now focusing on doing process improvement or redesigning.
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a few things about myself. I have learned that I can be independent, I always knew myself as someone who could do mostly everything on their own. This semester really made me realize how independent I could actually be. Not only have I learned how independent I am I have also realized the importance of time management. With not having a strict class schedule it was a lot different than what I was originally used to. After a few weeks, I learned ways that would work best for me, for example writing down that I needed to get done. I learned that I need to focus on what 's ahead of me to accomplish what I want to succeed in, to manage what needs to be done ahead of time to stay caught up.
Process Management can be defined as a concept which helps integrate performance excellence and quality into the strategic management of organizations. Process management includes activities such as defining a process, establishing responsibilities, evaluating process performance and also identifying opportunities for improvement. Innovation, on the other hand, can be defined as the conversion of knowledge and ideas into new or improved products, processes or services to gain competitive advantage. After reading the first article it is clear that it focuses mainly on three different programs that are associated with process management. These three processes are listed as TQM, ISO 9000, and Six Sigma.
Business Process Management (BPM) is considered as the umbrella of our research. This chapter introduces an overview of BPM which offers a set of diversity values for organizations. Figure 2.1 represents the different areas that we covered in this chapter.
