Personal Statement: A Career In Public Health

22 years ago, there was a girl born in a village in Faridpur, Bangladesh. Like most babies born in that area, her mother did not receive any form of prenatal care and neither did she have an ultrasound. When this little girl finally came into the world, both of her knees had formed backwards. Since her mother had her husband nearby, they were able to take the baby girl to the hospital to get her legs fixed, and thankfully she is able to walk and run just like everyone else. Unlike most infants who have a complicated birth in Bangladesh, I was fortunate enough to promptly receive treatment and eventually move far away from that village. Throughout my childhood I never realized how important health education and health promotion were until I took my first international health class. While many of us are fortunate to have access to health information with a click of a button, there are many who are far away from accurate information. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in public health when I learned about the different forms of health delivery in third world countries. My international health class also introduced me to the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Coalition (BRAC). All of our interactions with students have to be logged along with their grades, attendance, and behavior records. No matter how well we connect with students, the difference that we make had to be evident in our paperwork and data. The little things we log each day has to reflect the improvements that is seen in the students. The goal is to see a seventy percent improvement among our students in at least one of the three areas which include academics, behavior, and attendance.
