Problem Framing Question 1.
If I was the principal, my first step would be to get staff members to help me come up with a shared vision and mission statement for the school. What do we want to accomplish by the end of the school and what do we want the school to look like in the future? The main purpose is for teachers to feel part of a mission. I would strongly advocate for the help of Bill Osborne to help me lead this. As a principal, I want to hear from teachers and see what they envision. My purpose would be assist and take their ideas.
I would also like to listen from teachers concerns and current mindsets. It sounds that teachers feel frustrated and do not have the support to be successful at their job. They feel that they have little
Teachers should be required to rewrite their lesson plans but use any template that works for them as long as they have the required guidelines set by the principal.
Question 5
I do not agree with Mr. Osborne statement that veteran teachers do not need to have lesson plans. I am open to having different templates. This is why is important to include training for lesson planning and data analysis as part of the growth of teachers. I think teachers should be turning in lesson plans until test scores have improved. Maybe a discussion of not needing to turn in lesson plans can happen if test scores go up in the school. The decision is up to the principal.
When it comes to lesson plans, I do think they can be written in whatever format the teacher wants as long as they have certain requirements such as: objectives, some timing, checking for understanding, collection of data, and what will happen if students did not master the objective? These are just some examples, but they can look different from teacher to teacher.
Question
If morale goes up among teachers, the culture will start to change. Once morale is up, teachers can start focusing on changing the culture of the school. They can create assemblies and events for students that encourages them to go to school and take pride in their school and classroom. For this to happen, staff has to be on board. For example, I my school the principal wanted to work on the behavior of students in the hallways. He figured that if student behavior improved in the hallways, it would also help in the classrooms. He started to give out letters to students to spell Carver. Students needed to collect all the letters in order to receive a reward from the principal. Some teachers were on board and talked to students about the letters and the importance of hallway behavior. Other teachers did not. This created an unfair process. For it to work, all teachers needed to be on board. This is part of the culture. The principal must work to ensure the culture of the school is positive, not only with students, but with staff
