In today’s society majority of songwriters do not write their own songs, yet, Christina Aguilera in 2002 wrote “I’m OK.” This song is about how her and her mother were abused by her father when she was a young girl. Children like Christina tend to have emotional problems long into their adult life. The song quotes, “bruises fade father, but the pain remains the same” (9) this line can been seen as imagery due to the violence that she experiences as a young child. The thoughts of bruises on someone so young can be viewed as disturbing but in turn nothing is done about it. Today, children who are often abused feel as though they have noone to turn to. When infants and young children enter out-of-home care due to abuse or neglect, the trauma of a primary caregiver change negatively affects their attachments” (Childwelfare). These mental injuries can last a lifetime for children, if they are not helped and guided. With the right foster parents most kids get the help they need, with the wrong ones they continue to suffer. In line 12, “Every morning that I wake I look back to yesterday” this quote is a connotation, due to the word “yesterday” going beyond its actual definition. Aguilera reflects back as yesterday being her entire childhood not the actual day. This is an example of how abuse will follow a child throughout their adult life. Studies show that adults who were abused as children are more likely to have social problems as an adult (childwelfare). If the system was built up more to a safer environment, kids would be more prone to telling their problems. A scholarly paper wrote that, “Children are placed in foster care when a child protective services worker and a court have determined that it is not safe for the child to remain at home, because of a risk of maltreatment, including neglect and physical or sexual abuse” (ChildTrends). These children who come from abused homes, continue to be abused through the foster care system. This campaign ad, is advertising that foster children deserve a happy childhood, because what has happened to them is not their fault. This little girl presents to be sweet, innocent, and young. Using pathos as a way to intrigue the viewer and build a connection on a deeper level. While trying to build an emotional connection to this ad, the creator also includes a sense of allegory. This one little girl does not just represent herself but also half a billion other children. This ad uses a nature setting background which is mostly seen in literature as a symbolic meaning for a calming tone, while using pink colors for the little girl which is seen in literature as compassion, love, adolescence. The creator has mixed two contrasting emotions to symbolize how these children should feel. However, the saying “I have the right to a happy childhood” gives off the tone of frustration, determination, and possibly sadness.
