Rough Draft Education is what society views as a “necessity;” it is something that everyone needs to go through, especially higher education. As a community, we believe that going to college or a prestigious university gives a person an identity in society and credibility. However, that should not be the case. A higher education is an option for individuals; it’s not a requirement to give a person a spot in society in order to be among us. People should choose if they want to be in college or not, and we need to stop stigmatizing people who choose not to go to college. My belief has always been “Everyone needs to go to college!” as I encourage all my friends to partake in an endeavour that I later on realize is not as easy as people in professions have made it out to be. Some actually believe that college “is to nourish a world of intellectual culture” (“What Is College For?” Gutting); however, as a nation, we can find culture everywhere. A person can learn so much just from their surrounding and learning things by themselves. For example, Augusto Odone is a father who truly cared for his son that had an illness that had no cure. After months of research through the library and the help of other chemists, he found a cure for his son’s rare disease called adrenoleukodystrophy. The University of Stirling ended up giving him an honorary doctorate for finding the cure. (The Economist, Web) This is just one example of someone gaining knowledge by using their resources. If one individual is capable of learning something they are passionate about or find a reason to do it, then they are able to do anything.
