Crack cocaine has been popular since the 1970s and mid 1980s. Crack cocaine is not a new drug; this drug is obtained from coca plant which grows mainly in South America. For many years, the native South American Indians chewed its leaves to develop strength and increased energy. By the 1800s, the cocaine was secluded from its leaves and used as a medicinal drug. By the late 1800s, it was used as an anesthetic and to avert surgical hemorrhage. The next century, people recognized crack cocaine an addictive narcotic and its non-medical use of the drug was ended by the Harrison Narcotics Act in 1914 (“How crack cocaine works?”).
The powder cocaine is heated and a solid material isolates the boiling assortment. Next, it is removed and dried out and cut into “rocks” ( Streetdrugs). Crack cocaine gets its name from the crackling sound it makes when it’s simmered. Since coca trees grow primarily in South America, it is very easy to produce crack and many statistics show that US and Canada has the most crack addicts. Crack cocaine is also considered a stimulant because it increases the action of the central nervous system and speeds up the metabolism resulting in increased energy and alertness. Since it’s a stimulant and a narcotic, once a person takes it he yearns for it more. Taking crack cocaine produces a sense of euphoria, well-being (University Of Maryland). Symptoms of crack cocaine are both physical and psychological. Physical and psychological withdrawal begins if the addict lacks crack cocaine. Once he hits on the drug, his tolerance level boosts; he takes increased amounts of the drug each time to get desired effects. The educators of the drug education programs encourage and present information in such a way that the audiences are persuaded to not take drugs. The educators present their presentations connecting it to real life situations (“The Narconon Drug Education Program”).
Drug alters the function and structure of a living tissue. Crack cocaine causes a person to be hyperactive, alert, feel “good”, speed up metabolism etc. However, these temporary “good” feelings result in death, nausea, vomiting, respiratory bleeding and many more. Nevertheless, there are lots of rehab centers for the abusers and the doctors or rehab counselors start the patient’s treatments once they have been submitted. We need to be away from taking crack cocaine and help the abusers by pushing them to detox centers.
