Although participating in high school athletics tends to keep student-athletes in school, leads them to participate in other extracurricular activities and makes them feel more popular than other students, it has virtually no immediate effect on academic achievement for most minority-group students. High school sports have a great impacts on students because they learn leadership skills, develop everlasting friendships, and overcome adversity numerous times(“Lifelong”).It is impossible to cover the benefits gained from sports participation without mentioning the fitness improvements achieved through training for and participating in athletic activities. When participating in high school students who participate are far less likely to drop out of school. Also when participating in high school sports, it has been show that these students have better grades. In addition, student-athletes concentrate and have better classroom behavior and are 15% more likely to attend college. Those who have played competitive sports in high school demonstrate more confidence, leadership, and self-respect. They are also better at setting goals and time management. Playing sports gives people a competitive edge that can be used when out in the workforce or the business world. Students who attend participated in high school sports are 73% more likely to graduate college with a degree within 6 years of graduating high school. Participating in sports gives kids something to do instead of sitting at home doing nothing. They also provide an alternative to get your mind off of things and have fun.
