In Henry David Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience”, he writes about why citizens should disobey government’s unjust laws. The American government was established to execute people’s wills, and this should not be forgotten. Citizens who totally rely on government believe that government symbolizes honesty, justice, rights and protection. In this way, citizens will comply with all the laws which the government formulates without thinking whether they are right or not. However, while the time is changing, government has been changing its morality principal. For example, some high level governors might misuse government’s right for individual interest. Before the civil war, the American government supported slavery because some richer people and plantation owners enjoyed free labor and superior rights. They were only concerned about their profit, which they made from slaves, and they did not care about the harm that they brought in slaves. According to that, people assumed that supporting slavery is just. On the other hand, the government misused its power to get individual benefits because slaves could not receive equal treatment at that time in America, whose government formulated unjust laws against them. In particular, they were sold as products. Moreover, the law of slavery is morally wrong. Moral people should refuse slavery, but the American government supported slavery for the sake of its own interests. As Thoreau put it, “There are thousands who are in opinion opposed to slavery and to the war who yet in effect do nothing to put an end to them”( 309). Thoreau indicated that the government was not treating each citizen equally, and it was injustice because it flagrantly disregarded the basic human rights of people who were in slaves. In addition, just laws should be the right of morality; for instance, getting respect helps people living in happiness and peace. Everyone should have equal opportunities to pursue happiness. In this way, the just government should treat each person respectively to satisfy people’s spiritual needs. Consequently, Americans should resist the unjust laws that were established by the government that make legal to allow the harm of the slaves. And not only slavery, but war too, must be under citizen
