Throughout society, women have always been considered unequal to men. Their rights are very limited and different to those of men; believing that they will always cause nothing but trouble. Women during this time are mostly at home, being a housewife and looking after their children, while waiting for their husbands to return back from their journey. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, two sides of women are presented and compared to one another. To begin with, in the Heart of Darkness, women were required to stay at home. In this short novel, women were to be reserved and obedient to their man or suffer severe punishment. For instance during the week of peace, Okonkwo’s third wife (Ojiugo) decided to plait her hair first, rather than prepare dinner for him and their children (Chinua Achebe, 19). As a result of this, Okonkwo waited until she returned home and there he would be beat her for not telling him beforehand. However, when Ezinma, his ten-year old daughter survives an illness that can take your life at a young age, Okonkwo felt great remorse that she was not born as a male. Okonkwo felt that Ezinma could do more as a male, rather than staying at home with her mother and being a servant to him and other men.
