The Health and Safety at Work Act is an umbrella act which covers all health and safety legislation connected to the salons in the United Kingdom.
Under the act there are many rules that must be followed, an example of this is: when hair has been cut and thrown on the floor it must be swept up and put in a general bin as to avoid a slipping hazard.
Sterilisation of tools and equipment falls under this act as well; there are three types of sanitation used in a salon: chemical, UV treatment and autoclave. Chemical sterilisation destroys roughly ninety percent of bacteria however it is recommended not to put wood into the barbicide as it goes inside he wood and destroys it. It is recommended to place tools into it for approximately thirty minutes. UV treatment is useful as it can be used on any material however it is not very effect as it destroys only around seventy percent of bacteria, the typical time to treat tools for using this method is between fifteen and twenty minutes. Finally the most effective method is the autoclave, this completely destroys all bacteria on the tools however many cannot survive the 125°C that the autoclave must reach, this means that plastic is not treated with this method.
The main purposes of health and safety legislation are to make sure that the employee, employer and client are all safe when in the work place. If the employee has any worries about the health and safety of the salon they must report it to their line manager so they may inspect it.

Fire safety is extremely important for the general safety of the salon. The Fire Safety Order is the main legislation that governs over the fire safety. All workplaces must have a fire extinguisher and a fire exit as part of this legislation. The fire exit of the workplace must never be blocked or cluttered in case of a fire.
