A Different type of Hero
Despite all of the odds against heroes, they prevail through adversity and reach the peak of the mountain through their inner courage. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry and his friends demonstrate heroism through their journeys and obstacles. When the average person thinks of a hero they typically think of a superhero that goes out and fights crime like Batman, Superman, and Spiderman, but not all heroes wear capes. There are multiple types of heroes in hero myths such as the classic hero and the anti-hero, The question may be asked whether Harry Potter is considered a hero and if so how?
J.K. Rowling’s view and depiction of a Hero Myth story encompasses both similarities and differences between a typical hero myth. A few similarities begin with the upbringing of Harry Potter, who is the main protagonist in the Harry Potter series. He was born into a notable wizarding family but life then changed when the infamous antagonist, Lord Voldemort, murdered his parents and he became an orphan. Harry was forced to leave behind the wizarding world and grow up with

The purpose of an anti- hero is to give the readers or audience another reason to side with the hero. The anti-hero in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is seen by most of the audience as Lord Voldemort and Severus Snape. Voldemort is a well-defined villain due to his evil actions against Harry and obsessive desire to kill him. The second anti-hero is the character known as Snape who is the professor that always seems to have something out for Harry. It appears to the audience that he does not believe Harry is worthy of the attention and special care that comes with being the boy who lived. Severus Snape is consistently scolding, cold-heartedly nurturing, or critiquing Harry. Snape is the common, prevailing anti-hero because he appears to be opposite of Harry, always deconstructing and reprimanding
In movies, novels, and life, people are named as heroes. The heroes we establish and the heroes we recognize, however, may not meet the criteria for a mythic hero. A mythic hero ventures forth on his journey, and comes forth from the hero’s path to greatness. Joseph Campbell, a mythologist who studied many of the great human myths and religious tales, realized, in studying these myths and tales, that there were certain steps that every hero went through. Campbell called this “The Hero’s Journey”; it is based on Carl Jung's idea that all human beings have an archetype. After Campbell studied a lot of the great myths and realized this pattern, he published his findings in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Ever since then, authors have used “The Hero’s Journey” as an outline to tell their stories. “It is important to note that not all of these individual steps are present in every hero’s tale, nor is it important that they be in this exact order” (Vogler 20). The Hero with a Thousand Faces gives a sense of significance as it looks into the inner mind and soul. The author, Joseph Campbell, performs two extraordinary accomplishments: compelling his readers that myth and dream, those are the most effective and everlasting forces in life and a unification of mythology and psychoanalysis with a gripping narrative. One well-known example of “The Hero’s Journey” from popular culture is the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling. In the novel, Harry Potter, the main character, is the chosen one and “The Hero’s Journey” applies to his life from the moment he is attacked by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named as a baby.
The dictionary defines hero in mythology and legend as, "a man who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and born of divine or royal blood. He is a person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life." In addition, I believe a hero is one to be looked up to and emulated. What is interesting about epic heroes is that their great deeds and exploits all have to do with defeating themselves, so with help from the gods they can truly become heroic. They can only defeat themselves with the help of the gods.
When people think about heros it is a person in a cape flying into burning buildings to save people or fighting a villain to save the world. According to Oxford Dictionary a hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. This shows how just normal people can be qualified as heros. A book that exemplifies this is To Kill A Mockingbird because it is filled with people that went out of their way to help others or the society as a whole. A person who did this in particular was Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch was a hero because he fell under the definition and was admired for his courage, achievements, and noble qualities.
Before one can be considered a true hero, they must complete a series of eleven steps that put them up to the test. More simply, they must start with departure, then initiation, and finally return home. Harry Potter in Harry Potter the Sorcerer's Stone, courageously completes all of these steps and is therefore considered a hero. He strong-willingly embarks on a journey that challenges his limits and tests his bravery. Without any support from his family, and being the despised child, he defeats his enemy, Voldemort. To push through the worst challenges, and starting from nothing is what makes a true hero. As Joseph Campbell stated, “You enter the forest at the darkest point, where there is no path. Where there is a way or path, it is someone
A hero is defined as "someone admired for his bravery, great deeds or noble qualities". There are three categories to which all heroes can be classified into, one of which is the anti-hero genre.
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
What comes to your mind when you hear the term hero? Is being a hero preventing villains from corrupting the universe? Yes, a hero is someone that stands up and tries to protect others from being harmed. In the book, The Outsiders, the Greasers proved to be the heroes of the story. It shows that no matter what your background is, you could always turn into a hero. They also showed that no matter how poor you are, you can still be a hero. The Greasers that I think showed bravery and fearlessness were: Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally.
Dictionaries’ definitions of the word hero are exceedingly vague. A standard dictionary limits the definition of a hero to, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities” (Dictionary.com). Heroes are people, not just men, who are generous, courageous, and take every event as part of the whole stream of life rather than as a critical moment. Humanity, endurance, and perseverance are other critical characteristics of a deserving candidate for such a title.
According to google.com a hero is someone who “is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievments, or noble equalities.” (google.com). For example, superman , superman is an all time american classic modern hero who is admired for his courage and for saving earth multiple times from super villains. Another example of a hero is Beowulf. Beowulf was created around 1000 AD and was known far and wide throughout the lands for his selflessness, bravery, and courage .
“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” (BrainyQuote 1) In the vast array of elements that combine to generate a fantasy novel, the one that unmistakably stands out is the archetypal characters that build the plot. These characters are predominant in the adventures, the magical powers and extraordinary plots and concepts. The word protagonist comes from Ancient Greek meaning "player of the first part, chief actor” or main character who comes into conflict with an opposing major character or force called the antagonist. The antagonist is the person who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with the opponent or the protagonist of a drama or literary work. Rick Riordan’s novel, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, clearly depicts various archetypal characters with distinctive ideas of a juxtaposition between good vs. evil, the adventures of the hero on a
A hero, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is "a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities". I consider Ponyboy to be the biggest hero in the novel "The Outsiders". He was able to save the children by putting his life in danger to save theirs. And he showed incredible qualities such as courage, humility and selflessness.
My book report is on the book 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone' by J.K.
Over the course of history the definition of what makes a hero has made many changes. Beowulf, Superman, and firefighters are all examples of heroes, but they are very different when broken down. Today’s society defines a hero by his values, his strength, and his journey.
what is a hero? A hero doesn't always have to be have to be a special individual saving another hopeful soul from a burning building, or being born as an extraordinary individual who has the powers to save lives. A hero could be anyone whose daily acts go unnoticed, and could never be heard. People spend their days doing these things without any notice the act of heroism. Heros can be anywhere without anyone noticing these simple jobs that they do to help others. Heroes can be blind to the human eye but can be notice by the simple acts of strength and selflessness inside them. Although some hero acts go unheard of, heroes can be selfless people, who take up the courage to fight for things bigger than oneself.
Harry Potter starts off slow, but gets very interesting near the end. In the beginning, you meet the Dursleys, Harry’s aunt, uncle, and their son Dudley. Then you learn that Harry’s parents were witches, and that they were destroyed by a evil wizard. A good witch, Albus Dumbeldoor, sends Harry to the Dursleys, because they’re his only remaining family. The Dursleys however, hated Harry and his family, so Harry was mistreated for years. He was forced to live in a cuborrod under the stairs. He had to watch as the fat, stuck up Dudley got whatever he wanted, and then usually broke whatever it was he got. Then one day Harry got a letter.
