Girl Meets World and the Evolving Family Girl Meets World is a show the depicts two types of families: the more traditional family, and a family of a single mother. While the two families are different they bring great insight into the current situation of modern day families. Modern families have evolved from the nuclear family and will continue to change throughout time, whether they will change for the better or not is undecided. In this show it shows that a family of a single mother, and daughter can function equally as well as a family that consists of father, mother, son, and daughter. It’s important to point out that no matter how “ideal” family one is there are still things that they have to deal with and fix. Family one’s issues often come from the growing up of their children. The daughter is just starting high school and the son is in elementary school, so each of them are growing and going through things. The father and the daughter have major different outlooks on whether she should be dating or not. This issue is dealt with them talking about the problem and working through it together. There are issues between the father and mother, they do not always see eye to eye and this creates tension. The important thing here is that they do not allow their personal issues to affect their ability to do their jobs and take care of the children. The children come first. These issues could easily point to there being a family crisis but I do not agree with that. These issues are normal and have been something that all families will deal with, regardless if they’re a modern family or a family from 100 years ago. There is no work and life spillover but there is a lack of equal time among the two. The mother works long and hard hours that leads the daughter to be by herself most of the time. The daughter goes to family one for the support she needs when her mother is not there for her. Family one takes her in like a daughter and helps her whenever it’s needed. This is very important to show that whether you are blood family or just family based on a bond or friendship that it’s important to help on another when there are issues. These issues are then brought to her mother and they work them out together. Her mother does the best with what she is able but sometimes it hurts the daughter to not have her actual mother there. One episode her mother lied to her about where her father went when she was younger. The daughter was very hurt and upset because she didn’t know who her father was and why he would leave her. Both families worked to cheer her up but it was only successful when she sat down with her own mother. While others can take the role of family members I think it’s important to have that connect with your blood related family. In the 70s, the Brady Bunch showed an all-white nuclear family. Today, Modern Family, shows a family of blended races, ages, and sexualities. For thirty years, the sitcom family has reflected the changing society of its time and there is no exception of this for the families in The Brady Bunch and Modern Family. For most people family is one of the most important parts of life. For they are the people who raised you and taught you things needed in life. For most of us we have a connection with are family that is unparallel in life, which is the reason for are undying love. At times though there is a point at which we take are family for granted like they will always be around. Parents might do things that are not agreed upon by the children, yet the parent thinks it is in the child's best interest. Sometimes it might not even be the best thing to do in that situation, yet parents have a true desire to protect their children from the dangers of the world. On the other hand, children do not always listen to the advice their parents give them and can get themselves into a lot of trouble. Anyway you look at it, most of the time we do not realize what we have until it is not longer with us. Many times we do take our family for granted and when one passes away there are many things we wish we could have said or done to show them are love. The play "Into The Woods," by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine is a direct example of how families treat each other. There is conflict ranging from hating sisters, to protective mothers and a disagreeing husband and wife. In the end lives are lost, family are in pain and those left realize that they need to treat their family better and hold on to the loved ones that they have. Families do encounter many difficult choices together, but they also must solve the problems together, and keep peace within the family, because bad choice will be regretted when those loved ones are not around longer.

By leaping into the societal messages of the popular 1980s show, Full House, one is able to learn a great deal about what the cultural direction of society was like at that time. Full House was a kind of, makeshift sitcom because it expanded on the typical formula of the age-old conventional “nuclear” family and made room for the idea of a non-traditional family that revealed it’s unconventional nature. Society seems to have many different opinions when it comes to relationships and families and what is ideal. The ideal family may not exist anymore. We now have in our society families that are complete that do not necessarily contain the traditional material. The traditional family, as society would see it; usually consist of a married, mother and father and usually children. Moms are supposed to stay at home while dads work the forty-hour a week job. However, in our 2003 world, families exist in a lot of non-traditional ways. A lot of families now consist of single parent families, or same sex parents and their children, or even couples that are unmarried but live together. And even now, if a family contains what society sees as traditional as far as having a mom, dad, and kids, other aspects are not traditional anymore. Women now have more opportunity in the workplace than they have ever had, therefore, many moms are career moms and dads are sometimes staying at home. Years ago, these types of families were given labels for being dysfunctional or abnormal, however, this label is not holding up as well as it did years ago. There are many non-traditional families that are raising children in a loving, nurturing home with a substantial amount of quality love. Quality is the key in any relationship between anyone. Traditional family in today’s society is rather a fantasy, a fairy tale without the happy ending. Everyone belongs to a family, but the ideology that the family is built around is the tell tale. Family structures have undeniably changed, moving away from the conventional family model. Nowadays more mothers work outside of the home, more fathers are asked to help with housework, and more women are choosing to have children solo. Today there are families that have a mom and a dad living in the same home, there are step-families, and families that have just a mother or just a father. Probably the most scrutinized could be families that consist of two moms or two dads. These are all examples of families and if all members are appropriately happy and healthy then these families are okay and should incontestably be accepted. So why is the fantasy of the traditional family model still so emphasized in our society? This expectation is degrading and misleading. Progressing with times one ought not be criticized or shunned for being true to their beliefs. It is those living falsely, living as society thinks they should that are the problem. Families have the most robust connections alive. These ties are so solid, and deeply intact that they can do everything and anything. These links allow a family to influence, shape, impact, and change one’s life. The intimacy within the family sphere, shape all who are inside it, this cannot be changed, and well anything that comes from within the family cannot be changed. The family itself can control and change our views on society, influence how we view the family unit, and yet most of all impact our everyday choices. The family’s capacity of guidance can make such an abundant shift that can only be felt, and barely visible unless seen through strained eyes, that makes this connection even more inexplicable than love.
