Everyone in the United States according to the US Constitution has freedom of speech and is allowed to be vocal on their thoughts and ideas. Having the constitutional right to communicate one’s opinions and ideas without having to worry about any censorship or the government getting involved in most instances, all fall under a part of the First Amendment in the United States. This part allows each citizen to have the right to freedom of speech and expression. Not only is this freedom a part of the Constitution of the United States, but it makes up everyday life by allowing each and every one to be diverse in their own unique way. College campus’ are no exception to having freedom of speech and there should never be an exception. Allowing those to speak what is on their mind in a college classroom, is what helps others formulate their opinions and express their ideas aloud as well. Individuals feed off of each other’s thoughts and it is because they have freedom of speech that they are allowed to do so.
The United States Constitution is the law in which the country has to abide because it is the firm structure that makes up the entire government system. “Everyone loves free expression as long as it isn't exercised” (Rosenblatt 501). In the article, We are Free to Be You, Me, Stupid, and Dead, Roger Rosenblatt argues for the people’s right to freedom of speech and expression, that is given by the U.S Constitution. Rosenblatt argues that freedom of speech is one of the many reasons the Founding Fathers developed this country. For this reason, Rosenblatt believes that we should be tolerant and accepting of other’s ideas and beliefs. Even if one does not agree with someone else, they need to be understanding and realize that people have differing opinions.
Freedom of speech has been a controversial issue throughout the world. Our ability to say whatever we want is very important to us as individuals and communities. Although freedom of speech and expression may sometimes be offensive to other people, it is still everyone’s right to express his/her opinion under the American constitution which states that “congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press”. Although this amendment gave people the right express thier opinions, it still rests in one’s own hands as how far they will go to exercise that right of freedom of speech.

As Voltaire once said, “I may disagree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” (Columbia). Being expression one of the most important rights of the people to maintain a connected society right to speech should be accepted to do so. The first amendment is one of the most fundamental rights that individuals have. It is fundamental to the existence of democracy and the respect of human dignity. This amendment describes the principal rights of the citizens of the United States. If the citizens were unable to criticize the government, it would be impossible to regulate order. By looking freedom of speech there is also freedom of assembly and freedom of press that are crucial for the United States democracy.
The United States of America is often known for having more freedom than anywhere else. The first amendment is the cornerstone of our American society founded years ago by our forefathers. Without the first amendment many ideas, beliefs, and groups could not exist today. The first amendment guaranteed the people of the United States the freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and freedom of petition. Although the first amendment guarantees us, Americans the freedom of speech, we cannot use it to cause others harm. The reconstruction Era is the time after the civil war when we started to form ourselves as a complete united country. The civil war ended in April of 1865, and Abraham Lincoln was sadly assassinated less than a week later.
