In 1776, the American nation was born and with it, democracy. Under the democratic government, people had new freedoms they once didn’t have and promises to protect those; these promises were guaranteed by the constitution and the amendments. American’s are aware of their rights, especially the second amendment. The second amendment secures the right to bear arms, which means all American’s have the right to own guns. Since this amendment was passed, almost 240 years ago, guns and gun control have changed tremendously. Guns are now used all over the world and one of the world’s most dangerous weapons. According to IJReview, people who fight for gun control does not really care about stopping the violence but actually having power in America (Schlichter, 2015). There is also a huge rally behind making it known the statistics of murder from a firearm than from death from other causes. They compare the chances of death from car crashes, poison, or accidental falls (Owens, 2015). There are more deaths caused by unintentional injuries and motor vehicles according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Even though gun control in America seems to be a recurring and very important topic, most Americans believe there will not be much change. The view of gun control in America changes drastically after mass shootings or violent crimes involving guns. After the latest mass shooting in Oregon, the population that supported stricter gun control went up eight percentage points (Damora, 2015). The spike in support for gun control quickly vanishes after the upcoming months after these mass shootings, suspected to be because Americans start to forget about the

In America guns have been a part of the country’s society since it’s birth. Throughout history the citizens of the US have used firearms to protect the nation, protect their families, hunt for food and engage in sporting activities. The issue of Guns and gun control is complex. Weighing the rights and liberties of the individual against the welfare and safety of the public has always been a precarious balancing act. In the United States, gun control is one of these tumultuous issues that has both sides firmly entrenched in their positions. Those parties in favor of gun ownership and the freedom to use and keep arms, rely on the fact that the provision for such rights is enshrined in their constitution.
