The field of public health is constantly evolving and improving itself in order to provide up to date information and treatment. This is required to assure the health and well-being of all individuals to the best of our knowledge. Prior to our modern society, the Paleolithic period, known for their hunter-gatherer methods, and the Neolithic period, known for the rise of agriculture, are both important historical eras in which we have learned what is beneficial and what is a nuisance to our health. Thus, there have been so many important discoveries and developments that play role in disease prevention, health promotion and treatment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health itself is not defined by lack of illness and disease, but is defined by the well-being in terms of mental, physical and social levels (World Health Organization, 1948). Overall, in terms of medical advancements for disease prevention such as vaccination, public health units’ efforts in testing and diagnosis, and technology in health care; our current period is arguably the healthiest. For instance, the development of vaccinations play an important role in disease prevention. As a matter of fact, numerous contagious factors that have led to severe illnesses and mortality, now have an effective vaccine against them and can now be view as vaccine preventable diseases (White, et al, 2013). In current time and location, we are lucky to have Ontario’s publicly funded immunizations available to us, which offer numerous vaccinations to improve our immunity against some severe and lethal diseases.
